The debut album of legendary rapper Nas absurdity was added to the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
absurdity, released in 1994, is considered one of the greatest rap albums of all time, “characterized by its masterful use of polysyllables and internal rhymes, surprising line breaks, and complex, technical rhythms. The album’s art was widely copied and proved widely influential. It was described as the sound of a kid from Queensbridge ransacking his parents’ record collection.”
absurdity is one of the iconic recordings recognized as part of the 25 recordings selected for preservation, along with recordings by Janet Jackson. National Rhythm 1814by Labelle lady marmaladeand by Louis Armstrong When the Saints March On.
The most surprising addition to the preserve list is Kermit the Frog’s rendition of Rainbow connectionperformed by the late great Jim Henson as Kermit in 1979 puppet movie.
“Wow, it’s a great feeling to officially be a part of our country’s history,” Kermit said in the press release. “It’s a great honor. And I’m so excited – I’m so excited! – become the first frog on the list!”
The new group of 25 brings the number of titles on the National Recording Registry to 575, representing a fraction of the nation’s vast recorded sound collection of nearly 4 million. copy.
“The National Recording Registry will preserve our history through these vivid recordings of the music and voices that reflected our humanity and shaped our culture,” said Librarian of Congress Erica Hayden. our culture for the past 143 years.”
“This year, we received approximately 900 public nominations to add sound recordings to the registry, and we welcome public input for the Library of Congress and its partners. It will preserve the diverse sounds of history and culture.”
