NBC News Morgan Chesky’s illness
NBC News reporter Morgan Chesky, who has been hiking all his life, had never heard of high-altitude pulmonary edema until the experience, which can lead to cardiac arrest and which he described as “completely scary”. Chesky shared about the experience today Thursday, May 11. “I never could have imagined a trip to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park would end with me on oxygen in the ICU ,” I said. The journalist had never been to an intensive care unit or an ambulance before. When he first announced the situation in April, he claimed on Instagram that he had no idea what was going on.
He went hiking to celebrate his 37th birthday. On the show, Chesky recalls “feeling uneasy” while hiking with his uncle Eric in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. His uncle observed his nephew walking a little slower than usual. “That’s why I watched you like a hawk the rest of the way,” Eric Chesky commented. The next day, Morgan Chesky felt even worse while hiking in Zion National Park, Utah. He was dizzy, weak and his heart rate skyrocketed. He often had to stop to breathe. The signs were especially worrying for him because his father had shown similar symptoms before dying of a heart attack at the age of 48.
Noticing Morgan When Chesky crashed, his uncle grabbed his bag, helped him out of the rut, and drove him an hour to an urgent care facility. According to tests, he had a blood oxygen saturation level of 58%, half the normal level. Chesky recalls, “That’s when it became incredibly real.” It took a while for it to sink in because I pushed through it, using over-the-counter medications and telling myself I just needed a good night’s sleep. But thank God we got there on time because every day got a little worse.
