Oliver Townend was born on 15 November 1982 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He grew up in Scapegoat Hill, a small moorland village near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. When he was 11 years old, he won the junior rookie jumping competition at the Horse of the Year Show with Cool Mule. He also entered the European Pony Eventing Championships at the age of 13 and left school at 16 to continue riding and trading horses professionally. He attributes his love of horses to his parents. Injury

In 2010, Townend suffered an injury. He was crushed by a horse falling on him while competing at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day in Lexington, Kentucky. In this accident, he broke his collarbone, shoulder bone, sternum and 4 ribs, but believed in the airbag vest that helped him leave the hospital after just one day.
