Multiple media outlets reported that scientists fear a breach in the 600-mile-long fault could trigger a destructive earthquake that destroys cities across the Northwest United States. Reports state that the hot liquid-spewing crater is located 50 miles off the Oregon coast, on the boundary of a dipping fault known as the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which extends from Northern California to Canada. Now, this geological feature has the potential to cause magnitude 9 tremors in the Pacific Northwest. The report states that this leak was first observed in 2015. However, a new analysis led by the University of Washington (UW) shares that the chemically distinct liquid is called “ faulty lubricant”.
