Puducherry imposes section 144

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in many areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday due to Cyclone Michaung. IMD reported that while certain parts of Odisha received light to moderate rain on Monday, cyclonic storm “Michaung” over the Bay of Bengal is still active and is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. The IMD issued a Yellow Alert on Monday, stating that there will be 7 to 11 cm of rain in these five districts of south Odisha. The warning adds that rainfall intensity (orange warning) is expected to increase in these areas on December 5.

Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code has been enforced by the district administration in the coastal areas along the Puducherry coast in view of the impending cyclone ‘Michaung’, which is predicted to hit the west-central Bay of Bengal beyond off the coast of southern Andhra Pradesh and neighboring northern Tamil Nadu. The district government restricted the movement of people in coastal areas near the sea from 7:00 p.m. on December 3 to 6:00 p.m. on December 5 to prevent damage to people and property.

On December 4 and 5, the district collector declared a holiday for all schools in NTR district. On Monday, the Tamil Nadu government announced a holiday as the state prepares to deal with the cyclone. The government asked private enterprises in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts to enable their employees to work from home. Rainfall is expected in different parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Odisha during the cyclone period but at different rates. With winds gusting up to 100 kmph on Tuesday afternoon, Cyclone Michaung, developing over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
