Rachel’s early life
DE Thame was born on 13 October 1961 in west London. At the age of 10, de Thame studied ballet to a professional standard at the Royal Ballet School, White Lodge, Richmond Park. Sadly, De Thame contracted glandular fever at 15 and decided to give up her dream of a dancing career at 19. She then began a course in Drama at Southgate College and pursued Art History at City Lit of London. Immediately after completing her studies, she joined Colnago, a prestigious international art dealer in London. Rachel de Thame was chosen by a modeling agency and began her modeling career. An important part of her modeling career includes appearing in television commercials. By 1998, she appeared in the mini-series Merlin and in the British film Bodywork.
After giving up acting, she enrolled for two years at the British School of Horticulture, studying Practical Horticulture and Plants & Horticultural Arts.
Rachel DE Thame’s career
Thame created the 2008 LK Bennett garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, for which she was awarded a Silver medal in 2008. de Thame designed the floral decorations for the Royal Barge (The Spirit of Chartwell). This decoration was used to convey the Queen and other members of the Royal Family during the 2012 Thames Diamond Competition. In 2016, de Thame co-curated the RHS London Rose Show
She is vice-chair of the wildflower charity Plantlife. De Thame has also written two books on gardening, Small Town Gardens and Rachel de Thame’s Top 100 Star Plants, and wrote Gardening with the Experts. She now writes a regular gardening column for The Sunday Times and has also contributed to the gardening pages of The Daily Telegraph, Gardener’s World Magazine, Women’s Own Magazine, Eden Magazine. Interestingly, De Thame has a variety of lupine named after her. In addition to Dahlia ‘Rachel de Thame’, Auricula ‘Rachel de Thame’ and Rose ‘Rachel’ were also suggested by Pococks Roses in her honor.
Rachel has also filmed her own series for the BBC, Small Town Gardens and Gardening with the Experts. She has also appeared on other gardening series such as Gardeners’ World Top Tips and Revival of the Great British Garden for the BBC and Countrywise for ITV1. Rachel married her first husband, Stephen Colover, in June 1986 and had two children together. The children’s names are Lauren and Joe. Rachel and Stephen divorced in 1993. She and her next husband, Gerard de Thame, also had two children together. They are Emma and Olivia. The family lived happily in West London and the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire after moving from Oxfordshire.
