Rugby is a close contact team sport that originated from the Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. Rugby is simply running with the ball in hand. The 28-year-old Openside winger was named Kieran Read’s successor as New Zealand captain on Tuesday, less than two years after breaking his neck in the 32-30 win over South Africa in Pretoria.
The collision with Springboks forward Francois Louw left Cane in considerable pain, but few could have known that as he walked off the field at Loftus Versfeld. Cane commented that his strong neck not only saved his rugby career but also probably left him unable to use a wheelchair after surgery a few days later. He said, “I might not be able to stand without it”. Cane has little concern about returning to the thick of activity that was so apparent a year ago, while he worries that he may never return to the playing field. In an unsuccessful hat-trick at the World Cup in Japan, he reclaimed the All Blacks’ number seven shirt and duly joined.
After more than a decade of world domination, semi-final exit at the hands of England was a bitter pill for rugby-mad New Zealand. Under his successor Steve Hansen and former assistant Ian Foster, the All Black’s potential rebirth will come under close scrutiny from fans of the success. With Foster having appointed him captain in February before news of the coronavirus outbreak caused a global shutdown of sports, Cane was also able to keep it a secret. The plan was to announce the 68-test winger’s appointment a few weeks after the Super Rugby season but the competition was suspended in March.
Raising hopes that rugby could return soon and even test with neighboring Australia if there is a further situation, the number of COVID-19 cases has plummeted.
