Imagine you are passing a road near a forest and suddenly a tiger or some other wild animal attacks you. Believe me, this is not an accident. In Maharashtra and Gujarat, you often see reports of tigers or other wild animals attacking humans. According to statistics, dozens of people have died from tiger attacks from April 2021 to March 2022.
The increasing rate of wild animal attacks on people in different parts of the country is a major challenge for local authorities. These incidents also worry wildlife experts. And this is why the debate about hunting has begun worldwide. But there are differences of opinion among environmentalists. Some people say that hunting is justified given the circumstances, while others believe that hunting wild animals is illegal.
What are the benefits of hunting?
- Control wildlife populations
- Stay safe in and around the woods
- Income source increases
- Attacks on humans are less common
What are the disadvantages of hunting?
- affects the environment
- Causes biological balance disorders
- Environmental impact
The Wildlife Protection Act needs reform
The Times of India (TOI) published a report quoting the former Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF-Wildlife) of Madhya Pradesh. In this report, former Director of Forest Conservation Board HS Pabla said-
Wildlife conservation in India needs major reforms Wild animals attack humans. In addition, others also suffered a lot. Such incidents are commonly seen across the country. Most importantly, the government has spent billions of rupees to protect and improve the sector but it is yet to yield any concrete results. Wild animals should not be considered a burden. It is part of our wealth. But hunting wildlife that damages our other resources could be legalized.
In the same TOI report, another environmentalist Dr AGT Johnsing concurred with Pablo’s views. He said that the right to hunt wild animals and cause damage to livestock should be given back to local people. For example, wild boars and nilgai destroy farmers’ crops. In many states in the country, wild sugarcane and nilgai destroy crops worth billions of farmers.
India should adopt the Namibian model
According to environmentalists and wildlife experts, India should also adopt Namibia’s model for wildlife conservation. Do you remember that Namibia became the center of attention when cheetahs were brought from there to India. According to experts, the Wildlife Protection Amendment Act, 2021 in India has nothing new in terms of improving wildlife related issues. India and Namibia signed an agreement on wildlife conservation in July last year. According to this agreement, both countries should encourage biodiversity conservation.
