A South African kindergarten teacher, Nolusindiso Hleko, shared the heartbreaking story of being allegedly assaulted by her employer in Shanghai, China, in a YouTube video that has since gone viral. The incident has since sparked outrage and raised questions about the response of the South African embassy in China.
In a video uploaded to YouTube titled “My Worst Year Abroad,” Hleko said: “On Wednesday, August 23, during a disagreement, a guy, the HR manager at my workplace, punched me in the face.”
She elaborated on her traumatic experience: “I screamed and tried to grab my cell phone to take pictures and videos of what was happening. Instead, he grabbed my phone and said he didn’t have my phone anymore… I was running through the aisles of this kindergarten looking for help.”
Hleko recounted how a woman who spoke English was able to call the police: “When we got to the kindergarten, they gathered everything that belonged to me on the table, telling me the reason they were stopping me from leaving was because they want me to go. Please stay calm so they can call the police to resolve the problem.”
Hleko later provided another update revealing her disappointment with the South African embassy. “For those who asked me to contact my embassy, I did,” she said. They were the first number I called when this happened but sadly they didn’t even have an emergency number, so I couldn’t get through to them that day and when I did, they said told me they would call me back and never did.”
The widely circulated video led to widespread concern and criticism of the South African embassy’s response.
According to a report from TimesLive, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) will now question officials at the South African embassy in China.
A DRICO spokesperson advised South Africans abroad that: “If South Africans in another country are abused or harmed, they should report the matter to the police in that country and inform the Embassy”. However, in Hleko’s case, she did both and still felt “powerless” in the situation.
According to the latest reports, Hleko is still safe in Germany while her viewers are calling on her to “name and shame” the school in question.
