A TikToker is facing backlash for purchasing a stranger’s ashes after the deceased’s son posted a market listing on Facebook.
Grief can manifest in many ways, and losing a family member can bring about many intense emotions, from sadness to shock to anger.
If cremation is the chosen path, deciding what to do with the ashes can be an opportunity to say goodbye and find closure. But what about making an extra dollar?
That’s exactly what one man decided to do after his mother passed away, selling 2oz jars of her ashes on Facebook marketplace for $30 each, add $5 for backstory – and one TikToker was eager to buy.
Lauren, an undertaker who goes by the name ‘lovee.miss.lauren’ online, posted a video on TikTok stitching another creator who discovered the strange listing on Facebook.
“Where is the list? Send me the list. I want to buy it and I also want to pay $5 more for the story behind the movie,” Lauren said. “Who sells their mother’s ashes on Facebook marketplace?”
And in fact, Lauren did buy the ashes, posting a follow-up on TikTok to share with viewers the unboxing.
But although according to Lauren, selling ashes may be legal, many people believe her choice to join the list is “unethical” and crosses “professional boundaries”.
“Okay, this is amazing. I used to work in the funeral industry and this is unethical, and she knows it,” one person wrote on Reddit. “The only suitable way is for her to buy them so no one else can and give them a suitable resting place.”
Another said: “This is disgusting and disrespectful.” And to add to the controversy, the ash seller even set up a Facebook page for his buyers called “I know it’s probably wrong but I bought some from Chris’s mother” .
It is unknown if Lauren is a member of the group or not. Check out all the latest entertainment news on our site here.
