A TikToker has criticized ‘Depop girls’ who buy clothes in bulk in the hope of reselling them, sparking a debate about the ethics of thrifting.
Billing itself as “the home of circular fashion,” Depop is a popular choice for those looking to buy vintage, pre-loved or custom pieces. From clothes to art, Depop has it all.
However, some have noticed a recent trend of people searching for all the best and most affordable items at thrift stores in the hopes of reselling them on Depop for a profit – and one dissatisfied TikToker.
Liz, who goes by the nickname ‘biggglizzie’ on TikTok, took to the social media platform to call out “Depop girls” to take away affordable clothes from “low-income people”.
“It’s funny that I even have to say this, but don’t buy clothes in bulk from thrift stores to resell on Depop,” Liz begins her video.
Declaring that she understands thrifting is a “cute little quirk” for many “high school girls” to make extra money, Liz asked ‘Depop girls’ to remember that “people rely on thrift stores to buy their clothes.”
“Stop wiping out thrift stores,” Liz said. “They’re not a quirky little wholesale retailer… it’s really a clothing store for low-income people.”
Ending her TikTok by asking resellers to “get a grip,” not everyone agreed with her stance on the issue.
One person pointed out: “The problem is that many resellers are also in poverty, so the ethics are very blurred.” Another said: “No, don’t say that!!! Reusing old clothes is important! [So] Many things end up in landfills [and reselling] help [people] work for live!”
