A TikToker who didn’t order dessert divided the Internet after she had to wait an hour for the check at an Italian restaurant.
Every country and culture has its own etiquette to follow when visiting, with unwritten rules governing the dos and don’ts of dining.
Italy is no exception, proud of its rich culture, traditions and pride in the dishes the locals prepare.
And — as one TikToker discovered — finishing your meal with dessert, a cappuccino or limoncello is an integral part of the dining experience.
Rae, who goes by the nickname ‘raegantanon’ online, posted a now-viral TikTok while having dinner in Italy. The video shows her in a restaurant with text revealing that she waited for the check for nearly an hour:
“[Point of view] It’s been 57 minutes since you asked to pay in Italy and they still haven’t brought it to you because you said no dessert, no cappuccino and no limoncello.”
In her video caption, Rae wrote: “I should have said yes to tiramisu.” Having garnered over 1.8 million views, her comments section was divided over the situation.

For some, such long wait times are unacceptable; “That way I will leave.” Another suggested: “Get up… they will give it to you.”
However, many people consider ending the meal with one of the options offered to be an important part of Italian dining etiquette. One viewer said: “Never say no to dessert or limoncello.”
And one might even offer an explanation as to why it is such an integral part of the dining experience; “This happened to me and the waiter told us he wouldn’t let us leave without a drink (which was either limoncello or cappuccino)… we asked why and he said they easy to digest because Italian food has a lot of ingredients and ingredients so they don’t want you to get sick/not come back.”
