Livestreaming giant Twitch has unveiled new policy updates aimed at preventing streamers from misusing embedded content.
Twitch is by far the world’s largest live streaming platform, attracting millions of daily active users. On October 20, thousands of fans and streamers descended on Las Vegas for TwitchCon, a three-day event for communities to come together.
Kicking off TwitchCon, the streaming service’s CEO Dan Clancy announced various changes that will take place during the event’s opening ceremony.
One of the biggest announcements is that creators can now stream across multiple platforms. However, at the end of the ceremony, Clancy announced another big change with a new policy update.
Twitch to crack down on misuse of embedded content
At the end of TwitchCon’s opening ceremony, Dan Clancy explained that a small number of sites use embedding in a way that Twitch did not intend.
As a result, Twitch will soon ban autoplay on embedded streams that are not the main part of the site.
“Twitch embedding is important for streamers and third-party sites to distribute Twitch content. However, we are aware of a very small number of sites using embedded content in unintended ways,” Clancy revealed.
He continued: “We are introducing a change to our embed policy to prohibit autoplay when the Twitch stream is a significant or meaningful component of the page.”
“For sites that do not comply with this policy, we will disable autoplay for embedded content,” the Twitch CEO added: “The update launches on November 1 and we will begin disabling autoplay on November 15.”
Ludwig was the first to bring the issue to light, in 2021 he criticized gaming website ‘Fextralife’ for “stealing views” by embedding Twitch streams on their site, significantly increasing number of viewers.
Since then, several creators have spoken out publicly about the issue, including the likes of Asmongold, Gothalion, etc.
