Twitter announced the removal of another popular feature as its revamp continues 2023

Twitter’s popular Circles feature is now being removed, the platform – now called X – has just been announced as its senior leadership continues to improve things.

It’s been almost a year since Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion, and during that time, there’s no denying things have been pretty chaotic.

From controversial changes to verification systems, more recent removal of various user interface toolsuntil the block is said to end, the platform is undergoing significant changes under its new leadership.

With no signs of slowing down anytime soon, another popular aspect of the social media platform is now being removed. Circles, a feature that allowed users to share posts with only selected followers, has now been discontinued.

Subtly announced via the Twitter/X Support account on September 21, the platform confirmed its intention to ‘disable’ the Circles feature in the coming weeks. Come October 31, this feature will be a thing of the past.

“X will stop using Circles as of October 31, 2023,” a stated on the website’s help page now read. “After this date, you will not be able to create new posts restricted to your Circles nor will you be able to add people to your Circles.”

Circles only arrived on Twitter in mid-2022, making it one of the shortest-lived additions to the platform. Naturally, since many people were new to using the tool, there was a quick backlash against the announcement of its discontinuation.

“Add this to the list of terrible changes that literally no one asked for,” one user said in the reply. “I hope you want more people to leave or make their accounts private,” another added in frustration.

“Why must we continue to destroy? [the] communication?”

TwitterCircles was only introduced in August 2022.

For now, it seems unlikely that any backlash will cause the platform to reverse its decision before the October 31 deadline.

Even with all the recent changes, Twitter’s new CEO assures that the platform is moving in the right direction and that “better” additions will take their place.
