The American football player is the number 10 wide receiver (WR) of the Miami Dolphins. Hill was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2016 NFL Draft. After three seasons with the Chiefs, he was traded to the Dolphins in March 2022, becoming the highest-paid wide receiver in the league.
He previously played college football for Garden City Community College, the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the University of West Alabama. Hill, nicknamed “Cheetah,” is known for his speed and has been selected to six Pro Bowls. He was also nominated to the 2010 NFL All-Decade Team as a punt returner and won the Super Bowl in Super Bowl LIV. When he was a rookie, he was primarily a return specialist, but eventually moved to wide receiver.
Assault on Tyreek Hill: a case of child abuse
In March 2019, Tyreek Hill was the subject of a child abuse investigation. Following an incident that left his three-year-old son with a broken arm, he was investigated for suspicion of violence. The son was placed in foster care the following month as a result of an emergency hearing conducted by the Kansas Department of Children and Families.
On April 24 of that year, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced that although his office believed a crime had been committed, the evidence did not allow them to identify the offender. The Kansas Department of Children and Families is still investigating the situation. On April 25, an audio clip was leaked of Hill and his fiancée, Crystal Espinal, discussing his son’s injuries. The couple talks about their son’s injured arm in the leaked audio; Espinal claims that her son is afraid of Hill. Hill says, “You should be afraid of me too.”
As a result, the criminal investigation against Hill was reopened. Prosecutors declared the case against Hill inactive on June 7. However, medical examinations revealed that the boy’s arm was broken accidentally, probably as a result of a fall. On July 9, the full unedited audio of Hill accusing Espinal of lying about the previous domestic violence case in 2014 and breaking her son’s arm was released.
The NFL issued a statement on July 19 of that year, stating that Hill would not be suspended as there was no evidence that he violated the personal conduct standard. They also said that if new evidence emerged, the incident would be re-examined.
Tyreek Hill had previously been convicted of domestic battery.
Tyreek Hill was arrested on December 12, 2014, on suspicion of assaulting his 20-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Crystal Espinal. According to police documents, the two got into an altercation and Hill punched Espinal in the face and stomach, threw her “like a rag doll” and strangled her. Following the allegations, Oklahoma State suspended him from the football team. Hill ultimately pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation and domestic abuse. He was sentenced to three years of probation, a year in a batterer’s program and an anger management class.
