Two officers, one from the Farmington Police Department and one from the New Mexico State Police were shot and listed in stable condition at the hospital. In a statement released Monday afternoon, the state trooper was able to drive himself to the hospital. Farmington Police Chief Steve Hebbe said he remained in the hospital as of Monday evening and was in good condition. Officer Farmington was released from the hospital Monday night.
Deputy Police Chief Baric Crum told reporters Monday afternoon that officers investigating the shooting found a “chaotic scene” with the suspect “actively shooting at individuals” around 11 a.m. bright. Hebbe said Monday night that the first officers arrived at 11:02 a.m. and the suspect was shot by police at 11:05. The shooter fired at least three different weapons, including an “AR-style rifle.” Authorities have not identified a suspect and Crum said he did not know if the 18-year-old had any prior contact with police. He added that no schools, no churches and no individuals were targeted.
Hebbe said during the shooting, the suspect roamed the neighborhood, about a quarter mile away, and randomly shot at anything that came within his head to shoot. On the other hand, Crum told reporters that a video posted to social media appeared to show the suspect walking around with what looked like a gun near a building. An officer was heard saying on police radio that the suspect was outside a church. Investigators are trying to determine the authenticity of the video.
Hebbe said it was initially believed there may have been more than one shooter but ultimately, it appeared there was no second shooter. Schools across the city were placed on lockdown at the request of police, the Farmington school district said at 11:15 a.m. Hebbe noted that police ordered a lockdown when they believed there might still be more than one gunman. The blockades were all lifted by early afternoon.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham called the shooting a terrible tragedy and said she was praying for the victim’s family and was grateful for the quick response from law enforcement. Monday’s mass shooting was the latest in a string of deadly attacks in the US in recent weeks. In Texas, eight people were killed in a shooting at a shopping mall in Allen just over a week ago. An officer shot and killed the shooter there. In Cleveland, Texas, a man was arrested and charged with killing five people earlier this month following complaints that he opened fire late at night. The suspect was arrested after an extensive manhunt.
