Tina Turner is a music icon. After launching her career with ex-husband Ike Turner, the singer and actress occasionally escaped his control and had a string of top 10 hits in the ’80s and ’90s. Now HBO is releasing a series. Documentary about Turner illustrates her impact on music.
TINA features footage sourced from hundreds of hours of archival footage, concerts and interviews. It includes testimonials from Oprah, former MTV journalist Kurt Loder and Angela Bassett, who played Turner in the 1994 biopic, What does love have to do with it?.
The documentary highlights her early singing days with ex-husband Ike Turner and their abusive relationship that ended in divorce in the mid-’70s. Despite her early success, Turner still struggled after breaking up and being forced to sing in dive bars as she earned enough money to set records. After nearly a decade of lack of success, Turner landed a recording contract with Capitol Records and released a chart-topping #1 album. Private dancer.

And The best, before disappearing from public view after marrying a German record executive and moving to Switzerland. Since then, she’s had quirky looks and performances but appears quite content living out her days away from the spotlight.
