As recently as Wednesday, a nearly 200-year-old West Point time capsule seemed to only bring up more dust when it was opened during a disappointing livestream that ended up containing hidden treasure. However, it’s just more hidden than expected. It is believed that the lead box placed by cadets at the foot of a monument actually contained six American silver coins dating from 1795 to 1828 and a commemorative medal. All were reportedly discovered in the residue of the box at Monday’s opening ceremony at the New York academy, which appeared to be its only contents. Reportedly, Paul Hudson, the archaeologist, said that when these were first found, it would have been great to find them on the stage. He took the box back to his lab and began carefully moving through the mud with a pickaxe and small wooden brush.

Furthermore, he said he was as disappointed as anyone by the underlying results of the live opening, which drew comparisons to Geraldo Rivera’s 1986 televised discovery of a Chicago hotel purportedly belonged to gangster Ai Capone, often revealing nothing but dirt. However, the event was live-streamed and students were filmed making their own guesses about what was inside the box. Hudson insisted he was a bit disappointed and he would tell the truth that that was the end result. He added that it might be better to retrieve the coins and medals in a controlled environment, which he plans to analyze for more clues about what else might be inside. In the box, there are 1795, 5-cent coins, 1800 liberty dollars, 1818, 25-cent coins, 10-cent and 1-cent coins from 1827, and 1828, 50-cent coins. There are various specialist websites that indicate the actual value of most coins depending on condition from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000. CBS, New York reported that when the monument is rebuilt, West Point will place a new time capsule inside, which will be opened at a later date.
