Miles Routledge, a YouTuber who goes by the name Lord Miles on social media, was captured by the Taliban earlier this year and is widely believed to be dead after going silent online. However, new updates confirm that he has been released after eight months – but he already wants to return.
Routledge, along with two British citizens, was captured by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) in Afghanistan in January 2023. After two months in detention, he was officially arrested in March.
This YouTuber calls himself a ‘danger tourist’ who goes to places where war or hostilities often occur. During a previous trip to Afghanistan, this tourist made headlines that led to his evacuation shortly after the fall of Kabul in 2021.
When he went missing in June, despite concerns, British NGOs believed the YouTuber was safe and was being treated humanely.
However, in October 2023, it was revealed that Lord Miles, along with three other British individuals, had been released from Taliban custody. But Miles soon expressed his desire to return to Afghanistan in a tweet.

Update on Lord Miles after being presumed dead
A new tweet was posted on Miles’ Twitter account on July 17, along with a photo of Miles, believed to be of his friend.
The tweet, believed to be from a friend of Miles, read: “Here is a friend of Lord Miles giving an update. 4 months in Taliban captivity.” It continued, “He was treated very well, had many servants, downloaded a lot of movies on his laptop, went on picnics and had tea with the Taliban cabinet government.”
His post also said that the YouTuber still loves Afghanistan and claimed to provide more updates in a week or two. The tweet added, “Miles was not aware of these tweets but we feel it is our responsibility to tell the world that he is okay and continue the spirit of British exploration.”
The The post has additional updates about how Miles was allegedly treated when one tweet read, “He talks like he’s on vacation. He is sunbathing, playing TF2, writing his 2nd book, reading TE Lawrence, exercising, eating chocolate and cakes, etc.”
The thread further revealed that the YouTuber went to the Taliban for the fifth time and the friend believed he would return in a month or two, sharing that he was happy.
In another tweet, it was reported that the YouTuber will sell his story to a journalist once he returns and asked people to message him about the offer on Twitter.
The post reiterated that Miles was not aware of the tweets but would see them once he returned and was paid. It ends with the proviso, “Highest bid wins. Minimum £5k.”
What happened to Miles after going to Afghanistan?
Miles became famous after claiming to be the last person to enter Afghanistan before the fall of Kabul. This YouTuber was kicked out after capturing Kabul and only re-entered the country again.
He announced he wanted to buy a gun before attending their parade commemorating the first anniversary of the fall of Kabul. Miles and two British nationals were detained for undisclosed reasons.
There are many rumors that he was forced to serve the Taliban, but all of these claims are without solid evidence. But eventually, the lack of updates and his disappearance led people to believe that he might be dead.
Miles was released from the Taliban after eight months in captivity
On 10 October, the BBC revealed that Miles, along with three other British individuals, had been released from Taliban custody, which was soon confirmed by the UK home office.
Scott Richards, co-founder of The Presidium Network—a nonprofit that supports some of those arrested—said on Twitter. “They’re coming home! Thank you everyone for supporting these men during this difficult time. We all feel relieved.”
Miles soon appeared on private Twitter page shortly after, where he told his followers that he planned to return to Afghanistan next month.
He wrote: “8 months of “captivity” by Taliban Intelligence, the best adventure I have ever had! All previous tweets are correct. Being close friends with many top commanders after many outings, these lovely guys treated me as a guest! I will return to Kabul next month.”
He went on to say that he was willing to share his story and photos with the press if they were willing to pay for it.
“Money money money. UK journalists please message me about your exclusive offer. I have lots of photos,” he wrote. “Of course need to fund another adventure !”
