Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen nightmare faced an uphill battle to rescue Sushi Ko in Season 3, but will the transformation be a success? Here, we look at whether Sushi Ko is still open or closed.
Venturing into the world of authentic Japanese cuisine, Kitchen Nightmares has delved into Sushi Ko, located in Thousand Oaks, California. It used to be a really popular destination, although at the time of recording this establishment was clearly in sharp decline.
Gordon visited in Season 3, Episode 11 – which aired in 2010. With dreams of reviving the failing establishment, owner Akira sought out Ramsay’s stern but transformative guidance to revive The waning fortunes of his restaurant.
So did it work? Is Sushi Ko still open for business today?
Is Sushi open or closed?
FOXSushi Ko used to be a trendy Japanese restaurant in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Alas, despite being imbued with Ramsay’s culinary knowledge, Sushi Ko cannot escape the clutches of despair. The facility closed just months after the episode aired in 2010, making it one of the show’s less fortunate participants.
What happened to Sushi Ko after Kitchen Nightmares?
Ramsay attempted to untangle the problems affecting Sushi Ko throughout the episode. At one point, he warned the owner that he “might kill someone” because of the unsanitary conditions of the place.
Among the myriad problems were a lackluster menu offering, idle staff and a frustrated owner who was struggling financially.
In one scene, Ramsay’s urgent questions about the state of the sushi bar were met with silence from the owner – so he accused him of not giving a “f**k” about the situation. His wife later said he had “given up” on returning.
Renovation efforts led by Gordon brought temporary respite, improved the menu and sparked a brief glimmer of hope amid the bleak reality.

After the restaurant’s TV appearance, it became clear that these changes were not enough to get Sushi Ko out of its financial quagmire. Ultimately, persistent problems overshadowed the on-screen revival.
Sushi Ko’s story illustrates the demanding nature of the restaurant industry, where even the hand of a master can falter in the face of long-standing problems. While Gordon set out to save the restaurant, it never came to fruition.
In 2023, Kitchen Nightmares was rebooted by FOX, meaning the series’ list of best episodes will likely see more additions in the near future. Sushi Ko is definitely one of the most memorable dishes.
