Nanalan, “who is that wonderful girl?” character is trending online but where does it come from? Well, the creator recreated the original puppet.
If you’ve been scrolling through social media regularly in the past month, chances are you’ve stumbled across a series of videos featuring the iconic “Who is that cool girl” meme.
The TikTok video, which features characters from the popular children’s TV show Nanalan, has garnered a lot of attention on social media.
In the video, we see Mona, who is dressed in a pink princess outfit, enter the frame as her grandmother plays the organ, to the soothing melody of “Who is that wonderful girl”.
“Could she be any cuter?” The lyrics ask before repeating, “Who is that cool girl? Oh look! There’s a suitor here,” at which point Russel, his grandmother’s dog, arrived, dressed as a royal courtier.
The video later became the subject of many memes. The original meme video, which has garnered more than 9.5 million views, was overlaid with the text, “When the clothes you ordered arrive and you treat your family to a fashion show.”
However, most involve romantic relationships, with another overlaid with “My man turned me on after I had a mental breakdown trying to find an outfit to wear”.
Another wrote: “My boyfriend when I finally recover from my complete breakdown and drop my attitude after the fight I started.”
Where did the cool girl puppet come from?
This meme originates from the show ‘Nanalan’, which was shown on Canadian children’s television 20 years ago. It eventually became so popular that it was featured on CBC, Nickelodeon and PBS for Kids.
The show’s creator modeled it after his grandmother, explaining: “Nanalan’ is short for ‘Nana Land,’ which I call my grandmother’s backyard. It’s about that little girl in the backyard.”
“My mother took Mona to her grandmother’s house every day and went to work, like the situation of many people. We were lucky to do it without a script, spontaneously.”
Creator Nanalan recreates the “cool girl” puppet after 20 years
It can be said that despite his popularity, Nanalan did not impress the public on the same scale as in 2023.
The creator, who has a YouTube account where they regularly post previous clips from the show, became more famous when he joined with great fanfare.
In a viral video, he revealed the famous “cool girl” puppet named Mona from the show that he recreated. The text overlay on the video reads: “When you ARE that cool girl and you feel like you’ve been in a box for 20 years.”
The video attracted a lot of attention, many viewers were excited to see the puppet after all these years.
“I LOVE YOU MONA,” an excited audience member declared, clearly happy to see her return.
Another wrote: “I would like a tutorial on how to build your own Mona.”
Even though she gave up her princess outfit in the aforementioned video, Mona is definitely still a cool girl.
