When he was six years old, his family moved to Blackfen, and he then went to Westwood Secondary Modern School, where he played cricket.
At Woolwich, Goodman worked as an apprentice to Harland and Wolff.[7] At the age of 19, he started dancing when his doctor suggested it as a method of treating a leg injury. After winning the British championship in Blackpool in her late 20s, Goodman turned professional, won a few more events and eventually gave up dancing. His extraordinary contributions to dance earned him the Carl Alan Award, and in 2006 and 2007, the show he performed on was nominated for an Emmy in the category of Reality/Competition Program special.
On 22 April 2023, three days before his 79th birthday, Goodman died of bone cancer at Royal Tunbridge Wells hospice. “Heartbroken, my dear friend and partner of 19 years, the one and only ballroom legend #lengoodman has passed away,” Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli tweeted on social media.
