London police arrested a Man United supporter when he took a photo wearing a T-shirt with the number 97 on the back and was said to be a reference to the Hillsborough disaster. It is believed that Man United fans were allegedly mocking the reference to the 97 Liverpool fans who died after the Hillsborough disaster. The Liverpool fan died as a result of a collision on 15 April 1989, during the FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield against Nottingham Forest. Images of Man United fans wearing T-shirts with the number 97 on the back and not enough text on them have begun to spread online. The Metropolitan Police event revealed news of a Man United fan being arrested on suspicion of breaching public order at Wembley during the final match of the FA Cup, via a post on Twitter. The post came on Sunday when the FA stated: “The FA strongly condemns the actions of the individual wearing the shirt linked to the Hillsborough disaster ahead of the Emirates FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. We saw a photo of the offensive shirt on social networks and immediately began to identify the perpetrator. On Saturday 3 June 2023, HSA said the first ever All Manchester Cup Final will take place between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley. It was a rare opportunity for the city to show itself in its brightest light but one so-called Manchester United fan wore an away shirt to mock the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy and their families. HSA added, “On the back of the shirt is the number 97, and above, where the players’ names usually appear, are the words Not Enough.”
About this despicable act, the HSA was alerted on Twitter and the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance thanked the FA, security staff at Wembley and the Metropolitan Police for their swift action to make the arrests so-called Manchester United fans wore away shirts with offensive messages targeting family members and survivors of the Hillsborough tragedy that occurred in 1989.
