Who is Armita Geravand?

Armita Geravand, the young Iranian man who was attacked by the morality police for not wearing a headscarf, has died. A young woman who fell into a coma after what they said was an attack by the country’s morality police for not wearing a headscarf has sadly passed away, Iranian state media reported. Activists claim that after the alleged attack at a Tehran metro station, 16-year-old Armita Geravand was taken to the hospital with a traumatic brain injury. This incident comes just weeks after Iran’s already strict headscarf law was strengthened to punish women who violate it.

The Hengaw Human Rights Foundation, based in Norway, claims that Geravand was “attacked” by the morality police and fell into a coma. In addition, according to IranWire, Geravand suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to be hospitalized. Rumor has it that Geravand was approached by female morality police near Shohada metro station and asked to straighten her hijab. “Unfortunately, the victim suffered brain damage that left them in a coma for a period of time; they passed away a few minutes ago,” IRNA’s statement stated. Earlier this week, despite efforts by medical staff to save her, Armita was deemed “brain dead.”

The attack on Armita Garavand was previously considered “unbearable” by the German Foreign Minister, who also compared it to the murder of Mahsa Amini. Iran’s strict Islamic dress code requires women to cover their hair and wear loose clothing. Anyone found violating these rules will be arrested, fined or publicly reprimanded by the Islamic religious police, also known as the morality police. Mahsa Amini, 22, who was arrested for allegedly not wearing a hijab properly, died in September 2022 while under surveillance by the morality police. The mass protests in Iran following Amini’s death were dubbed the “Mahsa movement.” As a result, authorities have tightened regulations regarding headscarves and cracked down on activism.
