A woman went viral on TikTok after discovering that a $2 necklace she bought from a thrift store was actually worth $3,000.

In a clip that has gone viral with 398,000 views, Jess Smith explains that she was shopping at her favorite thrift store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania when she headed straight for the necklace stand as usual.

While looking around, the TikToker found a necklace with a “very large and translucent” pendant, which many viewers said looked like a Tide Pod. Jess also noticed a signature dated 1973 on the piece of paper, but she wasn’t sure what the scribbles said.

After purchasing a $2 necklace, she did a reverse Google search for it and was surprised to discover that it was actually a rare piece of lost art. It was created by the late Pittsburgh artist Aaronel deRoy Gruber, a sculptor known for his 3D plexiglass works.

Jess then contacted the Aaronel deRoy Gruber Foundation, whose team invited her to bring the necklace and see some of the artist’s other works.

When she met the fund manager, they were able to confirm that her necklace was in fact the real thing and valued between $2,800 and $3,200.

When she discovered this, Jess said she “sent a special loan to the foundation for them to display” because she “couldn’t sell this.”

“When I saw this item in the store, I thought it would be something fun to wear,” TikToker says in his video. “But now that I know it is a historical work of art, I don’t believe I will sell it.”

This is just the latest thrift store moment to go viral on TikTok after a woman found an urn filled with pet ashes at her local Goodwill.
