In a recent development, two men were arrested in the ACT and charged in a Brisbane court over the seizure of cocaine on a $61 million yacht in Townsville. It has emerged that Brisbane court today was involved in the seizure of nearly 250kg of cocaine from a yacht in Townsville. According to the Australian Federal Police, they will charge men aged 55 and 44 who traveled to Townsville from Canberra in May to recover cocaine that had been destroyed in the hull of a yacht departing from Vanuatu to Australia. It is understood that in April the yacht arrived in Townsville, which raised suspicions that the Australian Border Force had restricted movements for 90 days while investigating.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

However, during the investigation, ABF Queensland Acting Operations Commander Melati Smith noticed minor irregularities in the ship’s hull. She said ABF officials believed the ship was at risk at the time it was removed from the water. During the investigation, the ABF noticed minor irregularities in the ship’s hull. However, Detective Chief Superintendent Adrian Telfer from AFP said moving and removing the drugs from the ship’s hull was not easy. It is known that they found and seized 247kg of cocaine with an estimated market value of about 61 million USD hidden in the ship’s hull. The men were arrested at an apartment in Canberra’s Griffith area on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Allegedly, AFB found a bag of nearly $300,000 thrown from a balcony by one of the men when police arrived. However, it is reported that the police will allege the money is proceeds of crime. The pair faced the ACT Magistrates Court last Friday charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug and dealing with the proceeds of crime, before arriving in Brisbane the next day. Additionally, the maximum penalty for these crimes is life imprisonment. The pair did not appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court today when the charges were described.<\/p>\n
