When you need to free up space on your iOS device, the first place you should look is the Photos app. But you don’t have to make any elaborate plans to get pictures off your phone to park them somewhere else — not if you use iCloud Photo Library. An obscure control in the photo settings is called Optimize iPhone storage<\/em> only stores thumbnails, not your original photos and videos, allowing you to save space while keeping your images accessible. As long as you have enough iCloud space to store your originals, you can keep as many photos and videos as you want without maxing out your mobile phone.<\/p>\n

Apple’s iCloud Photo Library is a great convenience — it stores and displays your photos on all your devices. If you’re running out of space on one of those devices, deleting photos from your snapshots deletes them everywhere, which isn’t what you want.<\/p>\n

Set up iCloud photo storage<\/h2>\n

Instead of deleting images, you can save on the space they take up when stored in their original resolution. With iOS 15 you can enable Optimize iPhone storage<\/em> control in your photo settings, which allows your iPhone to turn your high-resolution images into lightweight thumbnails. The original photos are still in iCloud, and you can back them up to your Mac or an external drive. Using this optimization control gives you the best of both worlds: all your photos are available to you whenever and wherever you want to see them, and you can save your storage space. If you check Download and save the originals<\/em>, all the photos you take on your iPhone stay on your phone in full resolution. Plus, any photo you take, store on your Mac, or otherwise store in your iCloud Photo Library will also be downloaded to your iPhone in high resolution.<\/p>\n

Optimize iPhone storage<\/em> it won’t instantly convert your images to thumbnails. You might see a combination of thumbnails interspersed with original high-resolution images if your phone has enough memory to support them. <\/p>\n

Your phone’s storage works in the background to keep track of the pictures you’ve viewed recently compared to the amount of storage you’re using for apps and downloads. It will always keep the latest media recordings or view in high definition. Other factors involved include the amount of storage and memory your phone has and the number of pictures on your phone.<\/p>\n

People with a lot of space on their phones will have more high-resolution pictures and videos stored locally than those with less space. Don’t worry about losing your high-resolution images when your phone compresses them to save space. You can always restore compressed photos to their original form by downloading them. You’ll see the compressed images being downloaded in real time, as they have a download circle in the lower right corner as they come from iCloud.<\/p>\n
