Having a ring finger longer than the index finger is associated with better performance in sports<\/p>\n

According to several studies, the length of your fingers may indicate your risk of developing certain diseases later in life.<\/p>\n

The length of the index finger (first from the thumb) compared to the ring finger (fourth) varies quite a bit between men and women. <\/p>\n

In women, both fingers tend to be fairly equal in length. <\/p>\n

But in men, the ring finger is usually longer than the index finger.<\/p>\n

Scientists in India suggest that this is because men are exposed to more of the male hormone, testosterone, in the womb. <\/p>\n

A 2006 study found that a ring finger longer than the index finger was associated with better performance in a number of sports, especially athletics, in both men and women. <\/p>\n

While a longer finger is also associated with an increased risk of developing knee and hip osteoarthritis in women, another 2008 study found. <\/p>\n

Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes joints to become painful and stiff. <\/p>\n

It is the most common type of arthritis in the UK.<\/p>\n

There is nothing you can do to change the length of your finger. <\/p>\n

However, it is possible to prevent osteoarthritis by maintaining a healthy weight, being active and controlling blood sugar levels with a healthy diet. <\/p>\n

If your palms sweat when you are not nervous, hot or unwell, this could be a sign of hyperthyroidism.<\/p>\n

The appearance of red or purple marks on the palms may be a sign of endocarditis, a rare and potentially fatal infection of the inner lining of the heart.<\/p>\n

And red and blotchy hands can be an early warning sign of a form of liver disease known as cirrhosis.<\/p>\n

Cirrhosis is the result of long-term, continuous damage to the liver.<\/p>\n
