The success of Zach Snyder’s action-packed zombie epic Army of the dead<\/em> is being expanded upon in the new film Army of thieves<\/em>. A prequel set six years before the events of the Netflix original, this heist film focuses on fan-favorite safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by Matthias Schweigh\u00f6fer.<\/p>\n

The film follows Schweigh\u00f6fer’s Dieter, a small-town bank teller who is recruited by a group of thieves to pull off daring robberies at the beginning of a zombie outbreak. Set across Europe, the ragtag group of criminals attempt bigger and more dangerous heists while being hunted by Interpol.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

If the trailer is anything to go by it’s that this movie looks like a lot of fun, with a little Italian work<\/em> vibe with it. Although it can be easy to take advantage of the reputation of Army of the dead<\/em> channeling Dave Bautista and building a movie around him, Snyder and co. took a more interesting route by exploring the character of Dieter and how he got into the safe-cracking game.<\/p>\n

Talk to IndieWire<\/em> after release Army of the dead<\/em>Producer Deborah Snyder called Army of thieves<\/em> a \u201cromantic heist comedy,\u201d adding, \u201cIt stands alone, and [while] you can watch it because it’s the history of our safe, it’s also just a really sweet and funny movie,\u201d she said. \u201cIt’s set in our timeline, but it’s not like a zombie movie. \u2026 It’s more of the same Italian work<\/em>, but it takes place in a world where these zombies exist in America and it causes instability in banking institutions. They are moving money around so this is the perfect opportunity for a heist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only does Schweigh\u00f6fer star, but the German actor also directs from a script by co-writer Shay Hatten. Army of the dead<\/em> with Joby Harold, and producing alongside Zach and Deborah Snyder, Wesly Coller and Dan Maag.<\/p>\n

Closed together with Schweigh\u00f6fer is Game of Thrones<\/em> And Fast and furious<\/em> alumni Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee (Pole<\/em>), Stuart Martin (Jamestown), Guz Khan (Men like Mobeen<\/em>) and Jonathan Cohen (Budapest<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Along with this prequel, an animated series, Army of the Dead: Las Vegas<\/em>, is also in the works. This show is said to be another prequel focusing on the main characters from Army of the dead<\/em>including Bautista’s Scott Ward, Ana de la Reguera’s Maria Cruz, Omari Hardwick’s Vanderohe and Tig Notaro’s helicopter pilot Marianne Peters.<\/p>\n

Army of thieves<\/em> will be released later this year.<\/p>\n
