Update on Zandile Gumede corruption trial
After several delays, the corruption trial of Zandile Gemede is now underway and the presiding judge has issued a warning to legal representatives on the matter, which suggests that they should continue case and did not withdraw for non-payment. Gumede is the former mayor of Thekwini who was tried along with 21 others for fraud, corruption, racketeering and money laundering. However, it is known that the case is being heard at the Durban High Court. Furthermore, Sharmaine Balton was handling the case in March and after a few hearings, the trial was adjourned. However, she did not withdraw and this will continue during the case. During Monday’s session, she warned that she would not easily allow representatives to withdraw funds. According to reports, a total of 122 witnesses will testify in the case. It is known that so far, only two of them have testified and both are still being cross-examined. It will now be interesting to see how the representatives will proceed with the case and not ignore their brief in light of the presiding judge’s recent ruling. It was reported that Mbuso Ngcobo, head of the city integrity and investigations unit was the first witness, but his cross-examination was interrupted when he fell ill. He later quit his job and claimed he had received death threats. It is still unclear when the prosecution will recall him to complete his cross-examination. The investigation was conducted by Integrity Forensic Solutions, part of a group of service providers approved by the city manager to conduct investigations on behalf of the entity. Reportedly, he was unable to speak under cross-examination. Meanwhile, the investigation seems to be taking place hastily. The remaining defendants are four service providers and their representatives who allegedly benefited from the waste treatment contract.
