The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild introduced us to a huge new incarnation of Hyrule, uniting all the areas and landmarks we knew from the Zelda series and tasking players to overcome through it by any means necessary. Climbing rain-slicked cliffs and maneuvering around tough monsters is a big part of the game – something Tears of the Kingdom largely lacks. You can’t browse the same Hyrule the same way twice, right? With vehicles you can craft thanks to Zonai Devices, Tears of the Kingdom changes the way you move – including letting you fall down a mountain from Sky Islands or ascend from below. But that doesn’t mean Tears of the Kingdom forgets what made Breath of the Wild so good – and it does it again with The Depths.

The world of Hyrule has literally doubled in size thanks to an underground layer that spans the entire length and breadth of the land above. The holes that bring darkness into the world of Hyrule are scattered around the landscape so you can enter the Depths from multiple points, and there are several rooms in the Depths – you can’t access them all from a single entrance . The Depths are dark, which means throwing Brightbloom Seeds to reveal is a borderline necessity, and the only way for you to brighten things up is to seek out Lightroots, which brighten your surroundings and work as fast moving points.
But gloom is more than just an emotion – it’s a malevolent force. Get affected by the gloom and you won’t just lose health – your Heart Container will be sealed until you return to the surface or Lightroom. This means that traversing the Depths with just a few hearts is a huge mistake – but it also holds some of the best rewards and secrets Link can find on his journey. If you want to reap those rewards, you’ll need to risk it all.
The Depths ended up being the biggest addition in Tears of the Kingdom, completely eclipsing the much-hyped Sky Islands in its marketing. Make no mistake, you can traverse the sky and explore various islands for hours on end if you choose, but hours in the Depths will hardly reach the sides of what you need to find. Tears of the Kingdom has stunned us with its Sky Island-themed marketing, as Depth is a much larger part of the game – both in scale and importance. If you, like me, were initially worried that traveling through the same Hyrule wouldn’t be as enjoyable the second time around, put those worries aside.
