11 Ways to Fix Instagram Reels Not Working 2023

If you’re having trouble accessing Instagram Stories, try these fixes.

Instagram launched Stories in 2019 and quickly became the app’s fastest-growing feature worldwide, with 9 out of 10 users viewing Stories every day. But its popularity doesn’t make the feature bug-free, and it stops working sometimes.

If you’re having trouble uploading or viewing Instagram Stories, we’ve listed several solutions to help you get Instagram Stories working again.

How to access and check the reels on Instagram

First, go to another Instagram account and check if you can see that account’s reels. If you can do that, you should have this feature too.

The Instagram Reels icon might have caught you off guard. Here’s where you can find Instagram Reels inside the app:

• On the Instagram home page, the Stories button should be next to the Search icon.
• Swipe right anywhere in the Instagram feed. The reels will be available next to the Story.
• Click the plus icon. You will see Reel as one of the options available.

How to view stories on the browser version of Instagram

If you enjoy scrolling Instagram on your browser, you’ll notice that Instagram shows Stories on your feed. If you want to see more of them, click the Stories button in the menu on the left.

To view an account’s Instagram Stories, go to that account and select the Stories button. This will show you every Story posted by that account

1. Check if the reels are available in your country

Before performing other troubleshooting steps, make sure the feature is available in your country. This way you’re not trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.

If you’re not sure if this feature is available where you live, you can check Instagram’s support page for a list of countries where Stories ads are supported. Where these ads are supported, Stories will be available to users.

Instagram reels not available in your area?

If Instagram doesn’t offer Stories in your region yet, there’s a trick for you to try.

3. Clear app cached data

Modern applications use cached data to ensure a smooth user experience. But if the cached data gets corrupted, it can cause all sorts of problems, including Instagram Reels not working.

In order for the app’s functionality to work again, you should manually clear the app’s cache data.

1. Open your phone’s Settings menu.
2. Tap Apps and select Instagram.
3. Open Memory & cache.
4. Tap Clear Cache > Clear Storage.

4. Update Instagram to the latest version

Using an outdated version of Instagram could be the reason Stories aren’t working. To update an app to the latest version available, launch the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, search for Instagram, and tap the Update button.

5. Update your device

Another reason why you can’t watch the reels on Instagram is because the operating system version is outdated. If other apps or features are also malfunctioning, you should update your phone manually.

On your Android device, go to Settings > Software update and tap Download and install. Then, choose whether you want to update your device now or schedule an update.

To update your iPad or iPhone, go to Settings > General and select Software Update.

6. Log out and back in

If updating the app doesn’t provide Stories, then signing out and back in to your Instagram account is another quick fix you can try. Launch Instagram and tap your profile icon from the bottom right corner. Then go to Settings and tap Sign Out.

7. Turn off Instagram Data Saver

Instagram has a data saving feature that will prevent content from preloading. While it may have a positive impact on your data usage, Instagram Reels will take longer to start playing. But if you have exceeded your internet data plan, your phone will stop playing Instagram Reels.

If you suspect that this feature is hindering Story playback, here’s how you can disable data saver on Android:

1. Tap your account icon and select Settings.
2. Go to Account > Cellular Data Usage.
3. Turn off the toggle next to Data Saver.

The process is similar for iOS. Tap your profile icon and go to Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options. There, turn off Low Data Mode.

8. Switch to Instagram Lite

If you constantly have to wipe your phone and Instagram cached data, you should switch to Instagram Lite.

Instagram Lite doesn’t take up much space on your phone and uses less mobile data. While there are some differences between Instagram and Instagram Lite, you can still view Stories on the Lite version.

At the time of writing, Instagram Lite is only available for Android phones.

9. Reinstall Instagram App

If you’ve tried all of the solutions we listed and still can’t use Instagram Reels, you should reinstall the app—especially if you notice other features stop working as well. Regardless of whether you’re using an iOS or Android phone, reinstalling the app will get it back to working as it should.

10. Report the problem to Instagram

If you still don’t understand why you can’t see your Instagram Stories, you should report it directly to Instagram Support.

1. Open Instagram and click on the three-line menu.

11. Try Instagram Beta

If you still can’t watch the reels on Instagram Lite, you can try another version. On Instagram Beta, you’ll get early access to upcoming versions, which might fix the problem. At the time of writing, Instagram Beta is only available on the Google Play Store, so it’s only available to Android owners.

Visit the Instagram Beta page and sign up to be a tester. You will then receive an update for the Instagram app.

While installing Instagram Beta can fix the error of not seeing Instagram Reels, you should be aware that the first version may be buggy or crash frequently. Unfortunately, you cannot run Instagram and Instagram Beta simultaneously on the same device.

What to do if Instagram Reels sound is not working

Mostly, Instagram Reels have no sound because the creators have turned off the sound, which can be an artistic way to make their Instagram account stand out, or because they don’t want to use sound. If you scroll down to Next Story and it has sound there is no problem with the app or your phone.
