Who is Luka Brunton? Meet the new Bosun at Below Deck Med 2023

Below Deck Med Captain Sandy has promoted Luka Brunton as the new Boson in Season 8.

Season 8 of Below Deck Med saw Bosun Ruan Irving kicked off the boat in Episode 1. As a result, Captain Sandy appointed Luka Brunton as temporary Bosun until they found a new Bosun. However, with no luck finding a new Bosun in time, Captain Sandy decided to promote Luka from deck hand to official Bosun.

Luka proudly accepted the offer, but of course, he was also very nervous. Is he up to the demanding duties of the job?

Who is Luka in Below Deck Med Season 8?

Luka Brunton was born on Halloween in New Zealand. According to the new Bosun, he is very close to his family but he also enjoys starting a new family with his yachting fleet. “It’s great to be on new boats,” he said in the introduction to Below Deck. “It’s like joining a new family. Everyone is very close. I love it.”

He was introduced on Below Deck Down Under in Season 2, following the controversial firing of deck hand Adam Kodra. While fans of the show weren’t happy that Adam was let go, considering he was a fan favorite, they were also immediately enamored with his replacement, Luka.

“I have been doing yachting for about seven years,” Luka explains in his introduction. “Two years as a sailor and the last five years as an engineer.”

According to fans, they are excited about his promotion from Deckie to Bosun.

“I really like Luka as the bosun,” one fan wrote on the Below Deck subreddit. “And what impressed me was how complimentary he was to his deckmates. He never talks enough about himself, he is so encouraging and positive. I think Sandy is right, he has good leadership skills. I hope he continues to do good work. But as Luka himself said, it was a really solid team, they worked really well together.”

Another fan of the show was quick to agree, writing: “Luka has been a great bosun and I’m so excited for him. He has a cool, calm and collected demeanor perfect for a leadership role and he seems completely capable of carrying out any task. I hope he continues to shine because after guys like Gary and Ross, I need a healthy body.”
