A dermatologist has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a simple tip for successfully cleaning a beauty blender.

Dermatologist Dr. Azi (skinbydrazi) took to TikTok to reveal how you can properly clean your makeup sponge with an unexpected cooking ingredient.

“Let’s see the best way to clean your beauty blender, the best way to clean it after each use,” she says in her video. The video has gone viral with over 5.1 million views.

She first rinses the beauty blender with water, before rinsing with soap and water. “Try using water and soap, which is high in surfactants to help dissolve makeup and clean it off,” Dr. Azi explains.

The expert then brought out the sponge and noted that soap and water “didn’t work well” because the makeup was still on it. “So what’s the secret sauce?” she asked her followers.

Dermatologists share beauty secrets

The most effective way to thoroughly clean and disinfect a beauty blender is to mix hot water and soap with olive oil, Dr. Azi reveals. “Oil attracts oil and helps dissolve sebum on the skin,” she explains. “Oils and makeup, those are the things that will lift and remove that debris, that’s the winner.”

Many viewers were surprised by this beauty trick and admitted they never even wash their makeup sponges. “I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned my stuff,” one user commented.

“I just bought a new one after about 6 months,” another added. “Don’t think I ever clean my beauty blender, I just replace them every year,” another confessed.

Others share their own methods. “I use hot water and facial cleanser. Pour it onto the sponge and rinse + repeat a few times until clean,” one person wrote. “I clean mine every day after use with Irish soap. You just scrub it with soap,” another said.

“I put it in soapy water and microwaved it for about a minute,” a third person shared, to which the dermatologist replied: “That’s a great trick too!!”
