WhatsApp video calling? What you need to know
Video calling is exactly what it sounds like. You call a contact you have on WhatsApp and you both can see each other on your smartphone screen. That’s what Skype and FaceTime have been doing for years.
Video calling on WhatsApp also works on Android, iOS, and desktop. That’s what makes WhatsApp one of the best apps for video calls. If you have any security concerns, check out these tips to help make WhatsApp more secure and private.
WhatsApp video calls are free domestically and internationally, meaning WhatsApp doesn’t charge you for making calls. However, video calls require an Internet connection, so they use data from your phone’s data plan or your home Internet plan.
If you’re using WhatsApp to call someone over a Wi-Fi connection, your phone’s carrier won’t charge you.

By default, WhatsApp video calls use your phone’s front-facing camera. However, you can switch this feature to the Rear Camera at any time with a tap on the screen.
You can also mute your microphone so others can see you but not hear you—just tap the Microphone icon at the bottom of the screen. To mute sound from the speaker, use the volume buttons on your phone. These are the WhatsApp video call settings you can find on both Android and iOS devices.

How much data do WhatsApp video calls use?
If your internet speed supports higher quality video, WhatsApp will take full advantage of this. Unfortunately, that leads to high data usage. If you’re not using Wi-Fi, you can quickly go through a lot of mobile data.
On average, we found that one minute of calling uses around 2.2MB of data on 5G. This isn’t bad, but it’s worth paying attention to if you use mobile data. A few X users also recorded similar numbers.
Multitask while on a video call on WhatsApp
Another highlight of WhatsApp’s video calling is the multitasking feature. Most smartphone video calls force you to use video calls and prevent you from using anything else, meaning you can’t multitask. However, WhatsApp has no such restriction.
On your phone, you can tap the back arrow in the upper left corner of the screen to check for other messages and reply to them. You can even exit WhatsApp to use other apps. When you’re ready to return to your video call, just tap the green bar at the top of the screen.

On PC, drag the video call window aside to access the contacts you want to message during the call. You’ll continue to see your Call Preview in the call window.
You can also minimize the call window and the person on the other end of the call can still see you.
