Nintendo and Illumination’s Movie Super Mario Bros has hit theaters, and fans are raving about the exciting adaptation of their favorite plumbing games. This movie collects so much material from over 40 years of games featuring Mario and his friends that practically every moment in this movie includes a clever easter egg as source material.

Now that the movie has finally been released, here’s a comprehensive look at all the Easter eggs in this cinematic video game adventure.

Super Smash Bros.

Mario is forced to fight Donkey Kong in this movie in order to get his father’s support in his war against Bower. When both fighters make it out, they do so in an arena that looks like one of the side-scrolling stages from The Super Smash Bros. franchise.

The scene also contains footage that could have been taken from one of the Smash Bros. games. Donkey Kong even delivers what looks like his Giant Punch from the legendary fighting game franchise.

GameCube ringtone

When Mario and Luigi get a call from the first customer of their new plumbing company, Luigi’s phone rings with a tune that should be familiar to gamers who grew up in the early 2000s.

This ringtone is the sound of the Nintendo GameCube splash screen where the console’s logo is formed from a small, purple cube. Coincidentally, the first GameCube game was a creepy ghost hunting classic Luigi’s castleone of the best GameCube games of all time.

Mario Kart

The best part of the whole movie, hands down, is the battle between Mario and Peach’s army and Bowser’s army on Rainbow Road, which many players remember as the bane of their existence playing Mario Kart with my friends.

The entire scene is a spiraling and high-octane thrill ride with many references to classic racing games. Heroes throw green grenades at their enemies, defy gravity as in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and one Koopa Trooper even knocks out Mario as a fearsome blue shell.

Foreman Spike

After seeing their first commercial as freelance plumbers, Mario and Luigi run into their old boss, Foreman Spike, voiced by the incomparable Sebastian Maniscalco.

Die-hard fans should recognize Spike as Mario and Luigi’s boss from Wrecking crew game series, which makes a great reference to an obscure character from Mario and Luigi’s early years.

It wouldn’t be a Mario movie without some cool power-ups. Mario especially needs to consume red mushrooms (which he hates) in order to get new strength. But there are many other power-ups that fans will recognize from the games.

In one scene, Mario can be seen gliding through the air in a Tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3. In another, Mario dons the suit of the cat from Super Mario 3D World in his gladiatorial match against Donkey Kong. Peach also uses the power of Fire Flower and Ice Flower, the latter allowing her to gain an advantage over Bowser.

Different worlds

During their journey to the Jungle Kingdom, Mario, Peach and Toad must pass through many iconic locations from the Mario franchise.

There is the Sand Kingdom from Super Mario OdysseyBob-omb Battlefield from Super Mario 64Rock Candy Mines from New Super Mario Bros. IN, and a bridge surrounded by Cheep Cheeps that appear in some form in many different games. They even cross the fields of Yoshi Island with a herd of the titular dinosaurs roaming in the background.

Hang out

When Bowser catches Luigi, he is thrown into a cage hanging from a chain above a pit of lava. These cages are reminiscent of the ones that held Peach in the games, showing how Luigi replaced her as the story’s person in need.

And in this hellish dungeon, Luigi meets many prisoners of different types, some of whom look like they were once part of Bowser’s army. Somehow, there’s even a blue Luma from Super Mario Galaxy who taunts Luigi with sadistic and nihilistic glee.

Little Icarus

When Mario becomes annoyed by his family’s criticism of his new career choice, he retreats to his bedroom and plays the cult classic NES game, Little Icarus.

Even for a Nintendo movie, this was the last place audiences expected to see Pete on the big screen. Unless Nintendo makes one Little Icarus movie, this might be the closest this angel can get to acting in a movie (not counting that anime trailer with Link).

Striker

The film makes surprisingly few references to Striker, another NES game outside of the Super Mario Bros. universe. This classic is especially famous for the final boss fight between the challenger Little Mac and the heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, who is almost impossible to beat. However, the filmmakers subtly gave a nod to this boxing game with the appearance of Punch-Out Pizzeria in Brooklyn.

Classical songs

Since this movie pays numerous homages to Nintendo’s classic games, it naturally uses many of the iconic songs from Super Mario Bros. franchise. To name a few, the theme of underground levels plays out as Mario and Luigi explore the sewers of Brooklyn.

The music for Bowser’s airship levels is played when he storms Penguin Castle. The audience even hears the Captain Toad theme song when Mario’s friend Toad first appears in the film.

DK Rap

The movie doesn’t just use music from the Mario games. When Donkey Kong makes his grand entrance into battle against Mario, he appears in the arena with a rap song from Donkey Kong 64 plays in the background.

While it’s a sweet tribute to DK’s classic 3D game, the song’s composer Grant Kirkhope recently expressed his frustration on Twitter because he was not included in the film’s exit credits after his work was used.

Mayor Pauline

When a major burst pipe is reported in the Brooklyn News, the audience hears a short statement delivered by none other than Mayor Pauline herself.

While Pauline first appeared as a damsel in distress in the classic Donkey Kong game, her character experienced a revival as the mayor of New Donk City in the Super Mario Odyssey. Her character therefore appears in the film dressed as the mayor from the latter game.

Baby Mario and Luigi

After Luigi is captured by Bowser’s team of shy boys, he remembers when Mario protected him from the playground bullies when they were babies.

In this flashback, both brothers appear to be children in the Yoshi’s Island games. Not only is this a loving reference to Super Mario Bros. in their childhood years, but also conveys how long Mario supported his brother and defended him from the world.

The original Mario

Many audiences had previously criticized the film’s directors because Chris Pratt voiced Mario in this film instead of the original actor Charles Martinet who voiced him. However, Martinet lends his voice to this film portraying Mario and Luigi’s disapproving father Giuseppe.

He also voices a customer at Punch-Out Pizzeria who plays the arcade game “Jump Man”, who looks and sounds very similar to the Mario that many fans fondly know from the games.

Bowser’s wedding suit

Bowser’s plan in this movie is to offer the Superstar to Princess Peach in exchange for her hand in marriage. Although she refuses his unusual request, the Koopa King forces her to marry him in exchange for the lives of his people.

The wedding is then in full swing with Bowser rocking his white wedding suit Super Mario Odysseywhich seems to fit the whole Elton John vibe he’s going for with his piano playing in the film.
