A video of a beachgoer luring a giant worm out of the sand has scared people. The video shows Australonuphis, a type of beach worm often found on Australian beaches.

“Australonuphis, commonly called Australian beach worms, can grow to over two meters in length. They are blind, but have a very good sense of smell and eat decaying meat, fish and seaweed washed ashore by the water,” reads the description posted with the video by X user Massimo.
The video begins to show a person using a piece of fish as bait to lure a worm. While the worm is peeking out from under the sand, the person grabs it and pulls it out.

The video was shared on August 24. Since its release, it has gone viral. So far, the clip has collected close to 7.2 million views, and the numbers are only growing. The video also garnered tons of likes and comments.

About the worm:
Australonuphis parateres, giant beach worms, are long and thin, according to a blog published by the Australian Museum. They can grow up to 300 cm with short tentacles near the head. “They are located on sandy beaches at low water level. They are omnivores, scavengers of seaweed and animal matter washed up in the beach drift zone,” the blog further mentions.
