A PERSON has been killed and passengers injured after a 52-seater bus crashed into a car on a bridge.

Multiple passengers are feared to have been injured as the driver was “severely trapped” when the horror happened on Cleddau Bridge in Pembrokeshire on Tuesday afternoon.

Dyfed-Powys Police tonight confirmed the incident was “now fatal”.

A spokeswoman for the police force said: “The collision involved a car and a bus. Unfortunately, one person has died.

“The next of kin were informed and with the help of the police.”

She said that one person was hospitalized in critical condition, while “several passengers” were transferred to the hospital with “various degrees of injuries”.

Photographs this evening showed damage to the bus, which appeared to be operated by a private company.

Welsh Conservative leader Andrew RT Davies posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, this evening: “Deeply saddened to learn that someone has tragically lost their life in today’s accident on Cleddau Bridge.

“My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to their family, friends and loved ones.”

Firefighters, emergency crews and police arrived at the scene around 2:15 p.m.

The bus driver was trapped in the vehicle, and a multi-agency response is underway.

The emergency team confirmed that 10 people were taken to the hospital.

Dyfed-Powys Police were also at the scene and confirmed that roads were closed while they dealt with the chaos.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews responded to a road traffic collision involving a 52-seater bus and a private motor vehicle.

“The teams pulled out the severely trapped driver, who was then transported to the hospital by ambulance.

“Several bus passengers suffered various injuries, and many of them were taken to the hospital by ambulance and police vehicles.

“This was declared a major incident, but it has since been withdrawn.

“Crash equipment, truck platform and trauma packs were used extensively during this incident.

“Some crews left the scene at 4.16pm and others remained at the scene to further assist the police.”

The emergency crew said: “We were called today, Tuesday September 5, at around 2.14pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A477.

“We dispatched five ambulances, one on-call operations manager, one Cymru High Acuity Response Unit and non-emergency patient transport service vehicles.

“We were supported by colleagues from Wales Air Ambulance.

“We have transferred one patient to the University Hospital of Wales and a further nine patients to Withybush Hospital for further treatment.”

Dyfed Powys Police added: “Police are in attendance at a road traffic collision which occurred on the A477 near Cleddau Bridge, Pembroke Dock at around 2.15pm today, Tuesday 5 September.

“The A477 is currently closed between the Honeyborough and Pembroke roundabout and road users are advised to take an alternative route.”

Crews from Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Tenby and Narberth were deployed along with the Air Ambulance.

The local hospital urged people not to attend emergency medical services unless absolutely necessary as they care for those involved in the accident.

Hywel Dda Health Board said: “We ask people to go to the Withybush Hospital for emergency medical treatment only if you have a life-threatening illness or serious injury, such as: severe breathing difficulties; severe pain or bleeding; chest pain or suspected to stroke or serious traumatic injury.”

Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford said his thoughts were with those involved.

Posting on X, he said: “I am concerned by the news of the major incident at Cleddau Bridge.

“The details are just coming to light.

“My thoughts are with everyone involved and I thank the first responders and emergency services at the scene.”
