All dogs were owned by BlueRose Dog Park

But despite all efforts to put out the fire at the BlueRose dog park, Staffordshire Police confirmed that 11 dogs have tragically died.

Staff at the kennels have since said they were “completely devastated” as they “desperately tried to reach” the dogs during the fire.

Although the animals were not locked in, it appeared “like they were overcome by smoke” and were unable to get out, they said.

Four dogs already outside were rescued, but staff were injured in the process, the spokesman added.

Firefighters and police conducted a joint investigation into the cause, which was not suspicious.

In a heartfelt post on Facebook today, the kennels said: “As most of you know we had a devastating fire in the early hours of Saturday morning where 11 of our beloved dogs sadly lost their lives.

“We are absolutely devastated. The dogs were not locked in and had great runs outside, the ones that were outside Deborah and I managed to get out, 4 in total while we injured ourselves.

“We believe that those who weren’t outside were overcome by the smoke so we hope they didn’t know anything about it.

“I would like to thank you all for the nice messages of support and all the people who have already helped with the cleanup.

“We will remain open and we hope you will continue to support us as the dog park has not been affected at all. Please be patient as we struggle to come to terms with this tragedy.

“RIP Socks, Skip, Chip, Chilli, Pepper, Hunter, Jade, Boomer, Tequila, Jack and Lyla. You were our lives.”

A police spokesman said: “We understand this is a disturbing incident which has caused concern in the community.”
