The hardest battles in God of war are up against the Valkyries — nine super-powered enemies that have incredibly powerful attacks, insane amounts of speed, and massive amounts of health. They represent the biggest challenge in the game and require the player to have good equipment and great reflexes.
However, the Valkyries are not invincible. With a little preparation and patience, you can learn the ins and outs of their attacks, outlast and defeat them. Earn a few that way God of warheaviest trophies, as well as some of his best armor and gear. The super-difficult fights are also some of the most fun you can have in the game. Use these eight tips to help you get the upper hand on the Valkyries and tear their wings off for good.
Take your time and avoid damage

Valkyrie fights are ones where your focus shouldn’t be on dealing damage, but avoiding it. It’s a bit of a departure from most battles in the game. All Valkyries carry a huge amount of health and deal huge damage when they hit you, so a few shots from the Leviathan Ax won’t cut it — you need to be in the long fight, and that means playing smart. Your biggest focus should be on learning each of Valkyrie’s movesets and avoiding their biggest damage dealers. There is some overlap, but each Valkyrie has her own set of moves that require quick reflexes to avoid damage. Be careful when you can and watch out for unblockable red circle attacks. You’ll find that avoiding Valkyrie’s attacks will usually help you find opportunities to strike back, but don’t overcommit to attacks and leave yourself exposed. Deal some damage and stay back. Staying alive is the best way to win.
Bring the highest level armor you can

Lots of stats and perks are available along with weapons and armor God of war, but the most important aspect of your gear is always its total level number. You will need powerful equipment to fight the Valkyries. In all cases, Valkyries deal a ton of damage when they hit you, and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to completely dodge their attacks while fighting. A higher gear level is necessary to allow you to absorb the Valkyries punishment for those moments when the attack misses. Some are harder to get than others though: the first few you can get to, in places like Thamur’s Corpse, tend to be easier than the ones that become available after visiting Helheim.
Generally speaking, you’ll want to be at least level 6 to face the Valkyries — but a more realistic point for defeating most of them is around level 8. For the Valkyrie Queen, you might even need to get to level 9. If defeating the Valkyries is giving you trouble, it’s best to go work on upgrading your gear in places like Muspelheim or Niflheim rather than keep banging your head against the wall trying to defeat a Valkyrie that’s too tough for you.
Focus on equipment that boosts health

A few pieces of armor, some spells, and even a runic attack or two are aimed at restoring your health. You’ll definitely want them, as well as armor that increases your defense and vitality. Ivaldi’s armor, which you can craft in Niflheim, for example, is handy because it continuously restores a small amount of health (it also carries a ton of sorcery slots and can be upgraded to level 8). Likewise, Gift of Apollo Heavy Runic Attack will restore some health as you stack damage against enemies. You should also consider purchasing Atreus’ Runic Vestment armor, as he will occasionally drop Health Stones on Kratos in combat situations, which could mean the difference between victory and defeat at a crucial moment. You’ll want everything you can get to stay alive in some of the toughest Valkyrie fights, so don’t leave any advantages behind.
Pay attention to Valkyrie’s health

If you look closely at the Valkyries’ health bars at the bottom of the screen, you’ll notice that they’re heavily segmented. Pay attention to how much damage you deal when attacking each Valkyrie and how quickly you can get down to those segment markers. When you take enough damage to completely drain one of those segments, Valkyrie will drop a health stone, and you’ll likely need every one of them. If you can pay enough attention, you’ll know when to expect a health bar and how much damage you need to take, and that information can help you survive. Either way, make sure Valkyrie doesn’t drop those health stones and then be careful not to be left open when you pick them up.
Use runic attacks with high damage

When choosing rune attacks for Valkyrie fights, skip the high stun quotient ones and go for damage instead. Also, AoE attacks aren’t that useful, since all but one of the Valkyrie fights are one-on-one (one of the Valkyries will summon a Draugr to make your life miserable). Picking good rune attacks and fully upgrading them before a Valkyrie fight can really make a difference. In general, Rune attacks can deal a lot of damage as well as interrupt incoming Valkyrie attacks. They also generally cannot be interrupted by Valkyrie attacks alone. At critical moments, a rune attack can do enough damage to make Valkyrie drop a health stone. Use rune attacks as often as you can to keep your damage low and gain an advantage in combat.
Save your Spartan Rage for emergencies

While rune attacks are good for dealing high damage as often as possible, Spartan Rage is something you’ll probably want to save up for when you really need it. Activating Rage prevents Valkyrie from interrupting your attacks while you wail on her, and also restores some health. This second aspect makes it great to use in an emergency, as you’ll get a bit of recovery while hurting Valkyrie, and you’ll probably get her to drop a health stone or two. Just remember to be careful about avoiding damage once your rage ends.
Always have a resurrection stone

Once you’re able to buy Resurrection Stones from the Dwarves, you should always keep them around — even though they’re known as essential items needed to destroy Valkyries. These monsters have a huge amount of health and hit their opponents extremely hard. The odds of you dying are incredibly high, but the resurrection stone will help you survive. Indeed, you will want the best you can get; later in the game, the purple legendary resurrection stone will become available. This particular stone will restore a moderate amount of health, but gives full spartan fury. Your playstyle will determine whether or not that stone will do you more than a health boost when you get back up. However, it’s important to remember that you need to replace your stones every time you fight a Valkyrie because there’s nothing worse than being on the brink of victory and then dying with no hope of coming back.
Use Atreus to keep the Valkyries out of the air

Several Valkyries have impressive and incredibly irritating attack methods that they use especially when flying in the air. One fires a shockwave that can blind Kratos, while the other Valkyrie has a huge, powerful hammer blow. However, you can interrupt many of these advances using Atreus’ arrows. Atreus isn’t usually particularly helpful in Valkyrie fights because his arrows can’t shock Valkyries, and he usually can’t get too close to attack. But when the Valkyries run away, you should surround them with arrows to try to knock them back to the ground. This will protect you from some of the most dangerous attacks the Valkyries throw at you, and can often leave them vulnerable to a follow-up attack if you can surround them quickly enough.
