How to make a Slack channel private

Slack is known for its ability to quickly create channels for all kinds of work decisions, from team brainstorming to coordinating client meetings. But sometimes Slack channels don’t need to be public—and users may want to have private conversations that aren’t easily visible to others. It could be a place to discuss sensitive business information or even reveal issues you have with Slack itself.

In times like these, it’s best to make the channel private. If you have the appropriate permissions in your Slack workspace, you can convert the channel to private mode at any time. Here’s how to do it and what you need to know about the change.

Make a channel private in Slack

Before you begin, please note that setting your channel to private is a permanent step. Afterwards, it will always be private, without the possibility of going back to public. Make sure the channel is never public again before you start.

Step 1: Make sure you have the appropriate permissions. Not every Slack user can implement a privacy setting. By default, only owners and administrators can convert channels this way. Owners also have the option to further restrict private channels if they wish. If necessary, contact the workspace owner or organization owner for more information.

Step 2: Open Slack and navigate to the channel you want to convert. Look at the very top of the channel, above the discussion thread, and you’ll see the current channel name. Choose Arrow next to this name to open the channel menu.

Step 3: U Channel menu, select settings tab.

Step 4: Scroll until you reach the option for Change to a private channel. Select it. Confirm that you want to convert the channel and it will immediately become private. Everyone currently on the channel will receive a message that the channel has become private. Now only members can see the channel and existing member must invite new members to join.

Step 5: If you don’t want to make the channel permanently private, you still have options to control some types of access. Under, under Permissions to publishyou can choose Edit and choose who can post on the channel, and you can also decide whether channel-wide chat options are enabled or not. This gives you extra customization if you want to keep the channel public but want to stop certain practices.

How to make a new Slack channel private

If you are creating a new channel, you can immediately set it to private. When selecting a channel name, switch the option to Make it private. You can then invite members one by one to the channel. This might work better for some types of discussions.

Additional tips for making a Slack channel private

• Each Slack workspace has a primary general channel used for public discussions. This channel cannot be made private. Even with proper permissions, you won’t see a private option in the channel settings.

• Making channels private can be a bit confusing if there are people from multiple organizations on the same channel. Only members of the organization where the owner/admin set the channel to private will see it (or not see it) as private. Members of other organizations will still see it as public. This may mean coordinating a plan so that all organizations make the channel private at once.

• If you make a channel private, files or documents posted to it are not automatically made private. However, messages and files posted after a channel has been made private are only searchable by other members of that channel, not the entire workspace.
