International Dog Day 2023: International Dog Day was founded by animal welfare advocate and pet lifestyle expert Collen Paige. It was first celebrated in 2004 when Collen was 10 years old and his family adopted a dog for the first time. The day aims to honor all types of dogs regardless of their breed.
On the occasion of Dog Day, let’s talk about the different types of dogs used by the Indian Army. These canines perform various tasks, such as guard duties, patrolling, searching for mines, detecting explosives, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), sniffing out illegal substances, such as drugs, and attacking potential targets.

The different types of dogs used by the Indian Army are:
German shepherd
German Shepherds are high energy dogs that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They can be medium to large in size with a strong and athletically built body. These furry friends are known for their exceptional intelligence and quick learning abilities. Their natural protective instinct makes them excellent guardians and guard dogs. German Shepherds are incredibly versatile and can excel in a variety of roles.
Great Swiss Mountain Dog

Bakharwal
Bakharwal dogs specifically belong to the Ladakh region of India. Also known as the Gaddi Kutta, Tibetan Mastiff, these dogs can stand 24-30 inches tall and weigh 85-130 lbs. These native dogs are trained by the Bakharwal and Gujjar tribes to improve travel and supply in the high altitude areas of Ladakh. The sledge was part of various operations and missions of the Indian Army.
Belgian Malinois
Belgian Malinois are hairy dogs that stand 26 inches tall and weigh around 40-80 pounds. A sharp-witted, faithful and hard-working dog breed belongs to Belgium. The perfect guard and guide dog played a major role in the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden.
Cocker Spaniel
The cocker spaniel, one of the most famous breeds in the US, is popular for its super energetic nature. Sophie, a cocker spaniel, received a ‘commendation’ from the Chief of Staff on the occasion of India’s 74th Independence Day. Sophie is an explosive detection dog who detected the initiator of the IED.
Vizla the dog
The Vizsla is a high-energy dog breed from Hungary that likes not to use its brain. The Indian Army relies heavily on the Vizsla dog breed, which is known for its adaptability and agility. This excellent breed originates from Hungary, and today it is known all over the world.
