A mass murderer from Cook’s Corner, identified as John Snowling, opened fire at a Trabuco Canyon vintage motorcycle pub Wednesday night, killing four people and wounding six others. Cook’s Corner is a well-known and enduring gathering place for the Southern California cycling scene. On weeknights and weekends, many motorcycle enthusiasts gather there for live music, open mic nights or simply for a refreshing drink after a long ride.

One of the six people shot at the Cook’s Corner Tavern Wednesday night while dining with another person is John’s estranged wife; three more people are dead.

Local TV station KCAL News reports that the incident began with a domestic dispute between the gunman and his wife.

“For God’s sake, police officers are sworn to protect our communities,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. “But instead of helping to save lives, John Snowling shot and killed people he had never met.”

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials, John owned two homes: one in Ohio and one in Camarillo. He may have come from Ohio to discuss a pending divorce case with his estranged wife.

John allegedly had two guns in his possession on Wednesday night and fired the first shot at his estranged wife and her friend at dinner. He then began shooting indiscriminately at customers, leading to an exchange of fire with deputies outside, where he was eventually shot and killed.

Marie posted a picture of John Snowling with the children on Facebook and added that he is now retired. According to the Orange County Register, John and Marie Snowling have been married for 22 years and have two grown children, a son named Noah.

One of Marie Snowling’s friends described John as “very, very controlling” and another called him a “crazy husband”.

“She said he was very, very controlling and she finally got the strength to leave him and she wasn’t sure what to do,” her friend C. Cahill told the Register. “She said her children were very supportive.”

Marie was born in December 1961, which means she is 61 years old. William Mosby, a forester from the lake, heard that Marie had been killed while walking with a cane to the Emergency Room at Providence Mission Hospital Mission Viejo. William said that although Marie is not his biological daughter, he sees her “as a daughter and a very dear friend”.

He identified himself to hospital staff as Snowling’s father and said he was told Marie Snowling had been brought in alive and taken to UCI Medical Center. “I feel great relief, what I heard was the worst.”

William described: “He was a crazy husband, who couldn’t deal with the divorce.” On Wednesday night, as she did every week, Marie went to the weekly spaghetti feast at Cook’s Corner, according to William. Shortly after she left, according to William, he heard a police car speed past his yard in the direction of Trabuco Canyon.

Bar patron Betty Fruichantie told NBC News that “she and the suspected shooter’s wife did not initially move when the shots were fired.” Orange County Sheriff confirmed in a tweet, “The suspect in the Trabuco Canyon shooting has been confirmed as John Snowling, 59. Despite the misinformation, his wife was injured in the shooting and did not die. We will provide additional information at a press briefing this afternoon.”

Cook’s Corner mass shooter John Snowling was born to the late George Snowling and Melba Ruth Snowling. His parents were married on August 24, 1951 and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2001, which was probably their last anniversary together. Thelma was predeceased by her husband George.

George passed away on January 20, 2020 due to kidney failure. He was born March 23, 1931 in Quincy, MA to William George and Anna Snowling.

John Snowling, though now retired, according to the Orange County Register, has over the years “been a veteran police officer who reached out to the homeless, a union boss and a private investigator.”

He served at the Ventura Police Department from July 1986 to February 2014 and retired almost ten years ago. He also led the Ventura Police Officers Assn. for years.

Although the company claimed it was just a single case, the newspaper claimed he worked for a local company. According to the publication, Snowling helped homeless people find housing through a “restorative policing” program.

Furthermore, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department stated in a press release, “We grieve with the community of Trabuco Canyon following tonight’s tragic shooting in Cook’s Corner. Our deputies responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 7 p.m. and arrived quickly. We believe that deputies engaged the suspect and that a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”

They added: “Four people were found dead at the scene, including the suspect, and six were taken to hospital. Our investigators are continuing to process the scene and we will be working through the night. We are grateful to our partners at the Orange County Fire Department, the Orange County Prosecutor’s Office and our federal partners.”

At the time of his retirement, he was supposed to be paid an amount of $129,000.
