Finding true love in New York is hard enough, with Kris Kelkar being gay. So when he was offered the opportunity to be a part of HBO Max’s new show, Swiping America, he didn’t hesitate.

“This show was a YOLO moment,” he said. “I never thought I’d do anything like this, but I’d just gone through a bad breakup and it’s funny that the guy wanted to be on TV so badly, so I kind of felt the cosmic irony of it all.”

In Swiping America, Kris is flown across the country. In fact, in each episode he is taken to a new location to meet a potential partner. Thanks to this, Kris now realizes that the gay dating scene varies greatly from place to place.

“For the gay community, the kinds of apps that are focused on hookups like Grindr or Scruff … will show you who’s next to you. And in Santa Fe, there were two people in town, on one of the applications,” he explained. “So the way you find queer spaces and communities to this day is super different in some of these cities.”

Kris hopes that his participation will encourage viewers to take risks. “We all have things we’re afraid to share, and dating is really personal. So there’s a big story out there that if a guy doesn’t like you, it’s a scorched earth – screw him! And if they don’t respect you, yes. But the bravest thing you can do is put yourself to the end. Always be open to the unexpected,” he said.

Swiping America, which premiered on June 15, 2023, was filmed in Asheville, Miami, Austin, New Orleans, Santa Fe, Boulder, Seattle and Honolulu. The goal of the series was to help the actors find a date and allow them to connect naturally.
