Tallahassee chef Leon Brunson is one of a groundbreaking group of 10 chefs and social media influencers featured in the upcoming Hulu Originals program “Secret Chef,” debuting June 29. David Chang, chef and executive producer, came up with the idea for the challenge, which pits contestants against each other in a series of blind tastings where they also serve as judges.

No one can tell who cooked what as they play the game in a secret underground lair while being presented with various difficulties. As an integral part of the labyrinth connected by a network of conveyor belts, they are each equipped with a separate kitchen.

The contestants compete for the ultimate prize of $100,000 while being separated from each other.

In addition, the evil animated hat pranks the contestants by trying to derail their cooking skills. Creating a gourmet TV meal was one of the challenges. Another involved creating a non-gumbo dish using gumbo ingredients. The 10-episode miniseries is binge-worthy and takes the kitchen to new artistic heights, forcing Leon to compete on an unusual and occasionally disturbing level.

“This was like a culinary Olympics over a three-week period that tested everything about food for me, so it was a wonderful experience,” Leon said of the show.

“It’s worth watching. I’ll tell you that,” Leon said in a recent interview with the Tallahassee Democrat. “I bring up Tallahassee a lot and I can’t say how I did it, but I think there’s enough Leon content in this show. I’ll just put it like that.”

“I have to say it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my culinary career and I’m opening two restaurants,” he told a local publication.

According to Leon, The secret chef the opportunity came to him after the producers of the series accidentally came across his Instagram page. He added that he was originally wary of the mysterious intention to be a participant. It all made sense when he got to the location and he appreciates the opportunity.

At Waffle House, Leon Brunson started out as a short-order cook. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to go to college, but he was sure he liked the way cooking made him feel. While education was key, nothing was more exciting than being in the kitchen. In 2013, Leon made the decision to enroll in a culinary school. While still in school, he worked in restaurants to gain practical experience and formal training.

Leon graduated from Florida State University with a degree in neuroscience, but he had his sights set on something else. “When it came to graduation, everyone said ‘Oh, I want to be a doctor. I want to be an engineer.’ It felt good, I think I kind of like the feeling of cooking,” Leon told za WTXL.

Before he graduated from culinary school in 2015, his father had a potentially fatal brain aneurysm. He chose Florida State University to complete his undergraduate degree in neuroscience. In 2018, he obtained his bachelor’s degree and that’s when he realized that cooking was his passion. He currently hosts weddings, corporate cooking, cooking workshops and private dinners

Before starting his career as a private chef, Leon assisted Kool Beanz Cafe’s pastry chef Sylvia Gould. He soon went into business as a private chef, offering catering and cooking lessons. These days, he takes his talents outside the kitchen and into the homes of his clients.

The secret chef isn’t it Leon Brunson’s first time competing in the kitchen. Among other online programs, he has appeared on T-Pain’s LG Homestyle Challenge on Twitch. However, according to an interview by the Tallahassee Democrat, Leon’s upcoming Hulu show was the most difficult of the four so far.

In the “Kitchen League” 2021, Leon also assisted Olivia Culpo, former Miss America and Miss Universe 2012, and in the chef division of the World Chef Championship 2022, Leon took third place.

In 2023, Leon intends to debut his long-awaited name-brand restaurant at the Cottages of Lake Ella. In addition, he is opening Leon’s Catering Cottage at a nearby location, allowing him to sell cooking supplies and ready-to-eat foods such as homemade sauces and rubs. Leon Brunson is the son of Cecil Brunson and Maria Brunson.

Cecil turned 61 in August 2022. He may have worked as SUPERVISOR OF PUBLIC WORKS in the City of Parker.

Maria is 62 years old and originally from Texas.

In 2014, Leon shared that his father had a life-threatening brain aneurysm out of nowhere at the age of 53. A helicopter transported him to Shands Hospital in Gainesville and saved his life. After numerous operations, physical therapy and lacerations, his dad is healthy and well.

While Leon was in a coma, he remembers telling him that no matter what, he would make him proud. Leon concluded the post: “Every time he tells me he’s proud of me, I wake up and remember my promise.” That was the reason I majored in neuroscience. I haven’t been home as much as I should have, but this picture will be one of my favorites for a while. I love you, Dad.”

In January 2021, Leon surprised his mom with an instant pot. He shared, “My mom was NEVER a great cook, but she fed the family and kept us happy. As I started cooking more, I would be impressed with everything I did. It made me so happy!! She called me asking if I had ever heard of an Instant Pot and told me how amazing it looked so I surprised her with one. Now she sends me pictures of the recipes she prepares and has become more involved in the kitchen. It makes me so happy.”

Leon has one sister named Adrianna Poppell who was once married to James Poppell. She is the mother of two beautiful daughters. She studied dental hygiene at Gulf Coast State College and attended Rutherford High School in Panama City, Florida.
