In 1957, on this day, the Malayan Declaration of Independence was passed, marking the day the country gained independence (Merdeka) from British rule. Malaysia’s predecessor, the Federation of Malaya, declared independence, marking the long-awaited end of British rule.

An estimated 20,000 or more people gathered to see the national anthem and the raising of the Malayan flag. The first Prime Minister of Malaysia shouted “Merdeka” a total of seven times. Digging through history

The first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman assembled a delegation of Malaya consisting of political leaders and ministers in 1956 to negotiate with the British rulers for the country’s independence.

On February 8, 1956, an agreement was finalized for the country to gain independence from British rule. However, due to several administrative and logistical reasons, the actual independence of Malaysia was declared on 31 August 1957.
