Terrifying footage has emerged showing another vehicle caught in the same flood

Distraught passers-by tried to reach the two people who were inside – but there was no escape for them.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the area, with more than a centimeter of rain per hour forecast.

One witness said a burst pipe could also have caused flash flooding on Queens Drive.

Rebecca Wilson, 27, told the Liverpool Echo that the water was about 15ft deep under the bridge.

She was in a taxi that almost fell into the water on a dark road on Saturday around 9 p.m.

Rebecca said: “The water was gushing like a waterfall and it was tons and tons of water. It looked like a burst dam and I think it must have been 15 feet right at the bottom of the dip.”

She said she thought she saw the red lights of a car underwater and called the police, fearing “someone might be stuck.”

She added: “The water came out of nowhere and the rain was so heavy that night and part of me just wished I had gone back and gone home.

“It was scary and at first I just thought I was seeing things and then I saw on the news this morning that there was a car in there.”

Locals said the road floods whenever it rains heavily, and several cars have been stuck before.

One man who lives nearby said: “I’ve never seen it that bad. It’s the deepest I’ve ever seen it. You could see the waves on it.

“It was absolutely tough. I’ve rarely seen it rain that hard. But almost every time it rains, it seems like they have to close the road.”

Merseyside Police said they were called to reports of two people trapped in a submerged car at 9.20pm.

Emergency crews recovered the bodies of a man and a woman who were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Their next of kin have been informed.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Dalton said: “Our thoughts go out to the family of the man and woman who sadly lost their lives in this tragic incident, despite the best efforts of passers-by, our officers and Merseyside Fire and Rescue at the scene.

“We are in the early stages of an ongoing investigation on Queens Drive to establish the circumstances of this tragic incident.

“Roads remain closed in the area as we continue to investigate and motorists are advised to avoid the road.

“We continue to appeal to anyone who was on Queens Drive, between North Mossley Hill Road and Dovedale Road at around 9.20pm last night and saw the crash, or who stopped to try and help or anyone who had any dashcam footage from their car to come forward as soon as possible.

“Similarly, if you live in the area and have any doorbell or CCTV footage from last night, please share this with us.”

Heavy rain fell near Mossley Hill last night at a rate of over 32mm per hour, according to the Met Office.

Flood warnings are still in place covering parts of Merseyside due to the conditions.
