Design, screen and durability

Riley Young / Digital Trends

The Motorola Edge Plus stands out from the Android crowd when it comes to its design. It features what Motorola calls the “Endless Edge,” which means its touchscreen actually curves downwards, creating a waterfall effect that’s visually impressive. While this gives the screen a distinctive and imposing presence, the Edge Plus’ appearance is somewhat clouded by its thickness. While the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is a notoriously large — and sometimes uncomfortable — phone, the Edge Plus is still almost 1mm thicker. This extra thickness makes it a bit unwieldy to hold and also undermines its stylish, contemporary look.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra scores an even bigger victory with its display. It has a 6.9-inch AMOLED display, while the Motorola Edge Plus offers you a 6.7-inch display. More importantly, the S20 Ultra’s resolution is noticeably higher at 511 pixels per inch, compared to just 385 for the Edge Plus. Combined with the higher 120Hz refresh rate, this allows the S20 Ultra to wow its users with incredibly bright and colorful images, and while the Edge Plus’ display is good, it just can’t come close.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is also IP68 rated, which means it can withstand dirt, dust and sand, and can survive immersion in 1.5m of water for a maximum of 30 minutes. In contrast, the Motorola Edge Plus doesn’t have an official IP rating, despite Motorola claiming it’s internally tested to similar standards.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Performance, battery life and charging

Motorola Edge Plus vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: Going beyond big 1Riley Young / Digital Trends

Motorola Edge Plus and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra have equal performance. Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 powers both smartphones, while both come standard with 12GB of RAM. As such, they run the latest apps and games with the same ease, although for an extra $200 you can buy the S20 Ultra with 16GB of RAM, making it even faster (and more future-proof). Paying for this add-on also gives the S20 Ultra 512GB of internal storage, while the Motorola Edge Plus comes standard with 256GB. Both phones also offer the option to upgrade the internal storage to 1TB via the available SD card slots.

In terms of day-to-day life, both the Motorola Edge Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra come with massive 5,000mAh batteries. Such large batteries allow both phones to last a full day of intensive use without the need for charging, while lighter users can last for two or maybe even three days. However, one area of the battery where the two phones differ is charging. The S20 Ultra is compatible with 45W fast charging, while the Edge Plus offers only 18W fast charging. In practice, this allows you to charge much faster if you’re in a hurry.

Still, the 45W charger is an added bonus, while the same can be said for the 16GB of RAM. As a result, we will call this round a draw.

Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Motorola Edge Plus offer triple-lens camera systems complemented by time-of-flight (depth) sensors. Interestingly, the main wide-angle camera lens for both smartphones offers a whopping 108 megapixels.

Combining pixels means you’ll rarely use all 108 megapixels from both cameras, but they allow for much more detail and dynamism in ordinary photos. The Edge Plus also has an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide lens. As for the S20 Ultra, it has a larger 48-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera. However, more megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean better performance, and in practice it’s hard to see much of a difference between the zoomed photos of the S20 Ultra and the Edge Plus, for example. Additionally, both camera systems aren’t as versatile or consistent as the ones you’ll find on the iPhone 11 Pro or Google Pixel 4.

Likewise, the S20 Ultra lets you record videos in 8K, but you’d need an 8K TV or monitor to watch them. Consequently, while the S20 Ultra’s camera system should be slightly better in theory, many of its obvious advantages aren’t particularly significant or practical, so this round is another draw.

Software and updates

As an Android smartphone, the Motorola Edge Plus runs on Android 10. This introduces a number of subtle improvements to Android, including a new dark theme, improved notification management and greater privacy transparency.

As for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, it runs on Android 10 with Samsung’s new One UI 2.0 on top. It’s just as functional as Android 10 itself, but makes the user experience a little lighter, with features like larger app icons, a simplified camera UI, and a native screen recorder.

However, while things are up to par on the software front, the S20 Ultra lags a bit as a result of Samsung’s reputation for being slow to roll out updates. That may not necessarily be the case in the future, but for now, we’ll give the Motorola Edge Plus a narrow win this round.

Winner: Motorola Edge Plus

Special features

Motorola Edge Plus vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: Going beyond big 4Matthew S. Smith / Digital Trends

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Motorola Edge Plus are compatible with 5G. More importantly, both are compatible with sub-6 and mmWave 5G networks, allowing them to take advantage of the highest possible 5G speeds. However, while Motorola claims the Edge Plus delivers “the world’s fastest 5G,” it’s currently only available with Verizon. This probably limits its compatibility.

As mentioned above, the Motorola Edge Plus also comes with an “Endless Edge” tilting touchscreen. It looks great, and it’s also designed to receive notifications and provide players with virtual shoulder buttons, for example. However, the S20 Ultra offers a much higher resolution screen and a smoother 120Hz refresh rate. It may not look particularly original, but the display it offers is undoubtedly the best on any smartphone.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra starts at $1,400, while the version with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal memory will cost you around $1,600. It’s available from all major carriers and retailers like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

To its credit, the Motorola Edge Plus is at least $400 cheaper than the S20 Ultra. Unfortunately, due to an exclusivity agreement, it’s currently only available from Verizon.

Overall winner: Motorola Edge Plus

The race between these two fantastic phones was close. The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has technical advantages such as wider availability, lightning-fast charging and long battery life, and an impressive screen. But in the end, the Motorola Edge Plus had – we have to say it – the edge.

Overall, while the Galaxy has some impressive features, the price is too much of a drawback, costing up to a whopping $600 more than the Motorola model. Most consumers won’t be willing to shell out an extra $600 just for improved video and increased RAM, especially since the overall user experience isn’t much better than the Motorola edge.

Motorola Edge Plus is a superphone with its top specifications, powerful camera, tireless battery and attractive design. Priced at a reasonable $1,000, it’s a better buy overall.
