Thousands of people lined the busy state highway known as MC Road in Kerala to pay their respects to that state’s late chief minister, Oommen Chandy, as his coffin made its way to his hometown Kottayam. The journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Kottarakkara town, 60 km away, took the vehicle carrying the lifeless body for more than 11 hours. Huge crowds gathered at key intersections along the route and on both sides of state highways to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader. Everyone has a personal opinion about Chandy’s humanity and how he has impacted their lives.

At 7:30 a.m., Chandy’s “Puthupally House” in Thiruvananthapuram departed for its journey in a KSRTC AC low-floor bus carrying the body of the former prime minister. It seems like all preparations for the burial ceremony in Kottayam on Thursday are likely to fail as the number of people is increasing by the minute. People waited for hours at different intersections to pay their respects to their leader, despite the heat of the day and scattered rain. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam are the four districts through which the procession passes. Many mourners came to Kottayam from different districts, including Idukki, Alappuzha, Kasargod, Kannur, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Thrissur and Wayanad, to pay their respects to Chand.
