And yet, this view is not widespread in Germany, it is still a long way off. Since 2013, the annual number of Donors has not exceeded 500 marks at the national level. Agatharied Hospital reports two cases a year where a deceased organ can be removed for transplantation. What sounds small is actually almost an exception. And for that, the district hospital has now received, along with the other two hospitals in the Bavarian parliament, a Bavarian organ donation in 2018.

The number of organs that are not donated at the hospital, but whose commitment to the subject is important for the award, with parts of the Bavarian Ministry of Health and the German Foundation for Organ Transplantation (DSO), as award distributors. The focus is on the transplant officer in all intensive care hospitals. “You are the main contact person in the Collection of Hospitals, so that all personnel involved in an acute case of organ donation are prepared in the best possible way,” said Minister of Health Melanie Huml in her speech. Your task is to identify potential organ donors among the ICU patients as soon as possible. Since only people with irreparable brain damage – for example after a rescue or severe injury – are involved in the post-mortem removal of kidneys, hearts, livers, lungs, pancreas or small intestine, the diagnosis is extremely complicated, explains Hertle. “You’re usually under general anesthesia.” Notification to the DSO is carried out only if two doctors of different disciplines confirm the final, irreparable failure of the upper and lower parts of the brain and the brainstem.

The second big obstacle is in front of us: the conversation with the citizens. Only when consent is obtained, the Eurotransplant team can fly for organ extraction. The deceased had an organ donor card, it is quick to answer the question. It’s hard when he hasn’t expressed himself. “For a family, the decision is often a big toll,” Hertle said. It does not hide the fact that you would be in favor of an already common contradictory solution in many other European countries in a “net recipient” country like Germany. “You have the freedom to say no,” says Hertle. “But you shouldn’t be at liberty to worry about it.”

Still so few Germans with the subject, a senior doctor about deep-seated prejudices. About the fact that potential organ donors are not treated with a medical emphasis. Nonsense, says Hertle. In these cases, excellent care is not a duty to compromise the condition of the donor’s organs.

The transplant officer is tired of worrying about enlightenment. So in April, you went on board the informative evening, which was attended by about 80 citizens. And inside the house, she repeatedly puts the issue of organ donation on the agenda – for example, in the curriculum of interns. The president of the state and member of the CSU voting circle, Ilse Aigner, is convinced of the effectiveness of such campaigns. “The people have confidence in the System. We have to do everything to keep this trend going.”
